This FULL-DAY WORKSHOP will equip you to progress onwards and upwards in your spoon-making journey. As well as recapping on best practise techniques, we will look more in depth at spoon proportions, adding in the ‘crank’ element and looking at decorative options – added features/bark handles/asymmetrical designs. Starting with a freshly cleft section of a log, we will carve an EATING SPOON for you to take home and try out on your morning bowl of porridge! We will be using and refining techniques with an axe, straight knife and hook knife, focussing on safety and economy. In this workshop you'll delve into the art of crafting a traditional wooden cup known as a Kuksa. During the day participants will have the unique opportunity to create their own Kuksa, gaining insight into the traditional techniques and tools used to crafts this iconic wooden vessel. Join us for a full day of woodworking, where you'll transform fresh locally wood into a functional and aesthetically pleasing Kuksa to cherish and use for years to come. This class is not designed for beginners and it is better suited for individuals with some knowledge of working with wood grain and familiarity with the challenges of working endgrain. If you're new to woodworking, we recommend joining one of our introductory classes before attempting this. This one-to-one course is for people who've carved spoons from wood before, a few or many. Both student and tutor will bring along spoons for show and tell. Whether you struggle making a crank in your spoons, want to improve your knife finish, practice your axe technique to make better spoon blanks, try making scoops and ladles, or just want to stop making spoons that all look the same, this course will help you get there. We'll help you to develop your designs and technique. You'll carve an individual projects, tailored to help with your specific spoon dilemmas. We'll talk spoons all day long and then some more. Tools and wood are provided, but if you have your own tools please bring them along too. We'll advise on buying tools and if you're thinking of buying your own you can try out a range of axes and crook knives at our workshop.

This course will be held over six Tuesday evenings and result in the creation of a beautiful three-legged bar stool. You’ll learn how to cleave (split) and shape green (unseasoned) timber to create the legs and frame for the stool using a variety of traditional woodworking tools such as the drawknife and spokeshave. Using further old-school tools such as the adze and travisher, you’ll learn how to sculpt the seat of your stool to a comfortable saddle. In the assembly stages, we'll explore some traditional joinery techniques which you’ll use to put the stool together and ensure it never comes apart again. The end result will be a strong and elegant stool that will perfect for relaxing at your breakfast bar or even real bar if you're lucky enough to have one in your home! This course is aimed at beginners as well as those with some previous experience. As the end product will be made predominantly with hand tools, expect a reasonable degree of physical exertion, although it’s certainly more enjoy than a boot camp!
