Turn a wooden bowl outdoors on a foot-powered pole lathe.

Learn how to turn a wooden bowl using a foot-powered pole lathe at our woodland workshop in the city. Suitable for beginners and improvers.

Small class size with a maximum of 4 participants ensures more attention from the tutor.

Learn a heritage craft at the London Greenwood workshop.

You will use a foot-powered pole lathe to turn your own wooden bowl from locally grown wood.

Starting by learning good axe technique to prepare your bowl blank then how to set up a pole lathe you will move on to master the use of bowl turning hook tools.

Powering your lathe by foot you will create a functional wooden bowl to take home with you.

We will also talk about drying, oiling and caring for your bowl as well as selecting materials and how to continue.

Bowl TURNING

Develop your creativity skill making a 15cm x 15 cm mosaic using the direct technique, where the tesserae is glued directly onto wooden support.

The one day mosaic workshop will give you an introduction into a  mosaic world, having the opportunity to learn and discover  more about this ancient art. The emphasis will be on the making  however, there will also be the chance to gain some knowledge of the history and evolution of  mosaic over the centuries.

All  designs are already  provided by the tutor. If you wish to bring your own design it will need to be agreed with the tutor in advance before the start of the workshop.

Please email the tutor  in order to receive  the templates design after completing your booking.

The workshops includes all materials.

Workshop contents :

Introduction to the course and the technique;
Selection of the design and materials;
How to trasfer/ draw an image to prepare the creation of a
    mosaic
How to cut and shape tiles to create your own mosaic using
    mosaic nippers;
How to create a mosaic using Andamento (layout)
    technique;
Direct method : gluing your tesserae directly onto the
    wooden support;
Complate and grout your mosaic.

One Day Direct Method Mosaic Workshop

This class is aimed to give children from all backgrounds  a chance to experiment, have fun and get creative in abstract artist Georgie Mason's studio on Stepney City Farm.  The classes are grouped into different age-groups, please book relevant date:

29.7.24 > 9-12 year olds
19.8.24   > 4-8 year olds

[Georgie] (https://www.georgiemason.co.uk/childrens-workshops) believes learning to explore and follow one's intuition from a young age is crucial to a healthy and rich development into adulthood. This class provides a safe space for children to get messy, meet others, be in a rural environment and most importantly, be themselves :)

The class is 1.5 hours long and begins with a wander round the farm, sketching things we see including the animals. Then we will head into the studio and start with some warm up exercises - for example expressive mark making to various different styles of music, collaborative pieces aka 'Squiggle Drawings', and drawing each other without taking the pen off the page - all great ice-breakers :)

Then we will work on a larger collaborative piece inspired by the farm - either the animals or the plants/trees. Finally we will each work on our own piece inspired by what we've learnt.  Children will be able to take home a final piece that they have created.

Georgie has taught art to children for over 10 years in various locations across the UK. She loves working with kids and is hugely inspired by their energy and imagination.  She looks forward to welcoming your children to the studio.

Paint on a Farm for Children

Children's Paint on a Farm Workshop

This is a private class where you will be taught by Candy how to use the potters wheel.

 You will first be shown a quick demo then guided through making your own pot on the wheel with help at every step to ensure you get a finished product at the end.

You will also have access to paints and tools to decorate your item at the end if you wish to.

This is a 1 hour class where you will be taught the basics and get a feel for the technique, perfect for those who are interested in trying it for the first time or just want a new experience!

Your finished items will be fired and glazed be Candy, ready for collection after 4 weeks.


Private Pottery Lesson for One

This workshop is ideal for anyone looking to be offered one-to-one guidance in a more hands-on cooking environment. Alternatively, if there is perhaps an aspect of pasta making that you would like to focus on, past and play can help you become more confident in the kitchen. This tuition can even take place at your house!

How is the class structured?

When you arrive, you will find the ingredients laid out for you ready to be used. The class will kick off with Vicky sharing some fun facts about the history of pasta and the origins of the ingredients. Then, Vicky will explain to you where the ingredients come from, what ingredients are used, where to get the best ingredients from and why to use those specific ingredients.

The workshop is entirely hands-on. After a demonstration of how to make the dough, you will make everything by yourself.

After all the hard work you can finally put your feet up and be rewarded with the delicious meal you have created, enjoying your dinner. There is the option to bring your own beverage or request a wine tasting.

One-to-One Pasta-making Workshop

Make a stunning mosaic out of a mosaic template, photograph or your original design. You will learn how to cut mosaic tile to precise shapes as well as how to design the mosaic with a consistent andamento. This is the flow of tiles and gaps in a mosaic which creates a distinct and systematic pattern.

Mosaic is a slow paced art form and you don't need to be good at drawing as we teach different techniques to copy and transfer a design onto paper or wood base.

Our short courses take place in a large mosaic-specialist studio and each class has capacity to maximum 9 students so everyone can have individual attention and help from the artist tutor.

One day courses are suitable for people who are complete beginners wanting try a taster session to learn the basics of mosaic making and have a fun day.

You will create a small piece of  14cm square mosaic using the direct method. In order to be able to complete the mosaic within the given time the design must be simple such as a star, or a flower, or a heart or an object silhouette.
