Carve a bowl from locally grown wood in a day!

Spend the day in our beautiful outdoor workshop carving a piece of locally sourced wood into a bowl. Using traditional hand-tools you’ll create a useful and aesthetically pleasing bowl. First you’ll use an adze and then a gouge to hollow and smooth the inside of the bowl. You’ll then shape the outside using an axe and finally a drawknife to smooth it out. At the end of a physically active day you’ll go home with your own wooden bowl.

Please note this class is for women only.

This is a drop in class to learn the crafty skill of pattern cutting. During this class you will have the opportunity to make a pattern from a block , adjust a ready-made pattern or even make your own block with free hand cutting style.

As a drop-in session, some, but not all of the points below will be covered over 3 hours - this will depend on your ability and how many sessions you have attended in the past:

How to take body measurements
How to adjust a ready-made pattern
How to make a free hand loose fitting  block to your size
How to make a skirt
Dart manipulation
How to create style lines
How to adjust a pattern to a different size

The class happens at the same time every week, so feel free book onto multiple sessions to continue to learn this skill!
These classes are ladies only classes for basic and intermediate levels.

In this three-hour workshop, you'll design and craft your own handmade pair of leather espadrilles.

Choose from our stock of leather reclaimed from local factory offcuts
Cut out your pattern, shape and pin the shoe to the sole
Hand stitch the leather to the sole with waxed linen thread

Our experienced makers offer expert instruction and support, and everyone walks out in their own pair of shoes - all materials provided and no experience necessary! We use premium jute soles sourced from southern Spain, which are thicker, more robust, and comfier than any other espadrille sole we've seen, so you'll be sure to love wearing your shoes.

Juta Shoes is a social enterprise making handcrafted sustainable leather espadrilles in London, supporting local women into work. We can also run our shoemaking workshops as bridal parties, team building away days, or birthday parties - just get in touch about booking an anytime class!

Leather craft focuses the mind, develops dexterity and creativity. During this 2 hour evening workshop you will select your own leather colour and thread, learn how to master the two-needled saddle stitching technique, use a range of traditional hand tools and also get to personalise your work with your own initials, all under the confident guidance of Garry Meehan who has run over 180 leather craft sessions with both adults and kids.

Rye Hide London was established by Designer Maker Garry Meehan. The name reflects the area of Peckham Rye, south London, where his workshop is based. Garry uses simple and traditional leather-working methods to make individually handcrafted goods, from handbags to card holders, glasses cases to change purses, which are as unique as they are functional.

Leather is a very adaptable and robust material that humans have used as long as they have hunted. The techniques and many of the hand tools have barely changed over centuries and does not take up much space; most projects can be made at your kitchen table.

The role of the Leather Artisan is seeing a real renaissance globally and Rye Hide London will regularly share ideas, tips and inspiration with fellow artisans in Scandinavia, USA, Europe, South Korea and Japan.

Leather Artisan Workshop - Make a Pencil/Glasses Pouch

This regular class in spoon carving introduces you to the art of carving with an axe, a knife and a crook knife.
By carving a spoon, you can focus on becoming familiar with the tools of the craft without the pressure of knowing what to carve.
As you gain confidence with the tools, you begin to build a relationship with your small scale carving and understand the subtle and addictive qualities of this new hobby.

We will use green wood, freshly cut with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.

You are supported through the whole process and encouraged to explore carving in your own way and at your own pace. This is an exercise in slowing down and settling your attention.

All tools and materials are supplied and at the end of the session you will have your first carving started.

Creative Nature HQ is located within Thames-Side Studios, a 7-acre site of studios and workshops occupied by makers, artists, craftspeople and designers.
We are right next to the river Thames and there is plenty of free parking on site.

There are regular sessions on Saturday mornings and afternoons and on weekday evenings.

There will be a choice of leather colours and you will be able to choose from gold or silver hardware. You will get expert guidance throughout your workshop by your teacher. There are a few design choices to pick from.

These are some of things you will be learning during your 1.30 hour course:

An introduction to different leather craft tools and different types of leather.
How to make a simple Key charm pattern.
Cutting your leather accessory from leather.
Marking out and cutting your leather.
Setting any hardware
Gluing and constructing the key charm.
Hot foil stamping your initials or name on leather using a professional personalisation machine.

Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with any of the terminology as you'll be given a demo of each stage and encouraged to practice on off-cuts of leather to build your confidence.
