The Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically supported, 8- week, 9 -session (a half –day retreat is included) training programme designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the ground-breaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moments in their lives with kindness, care and understanding.

Having kindness for oneself may sound like a surprising skill to learn, but the truth is we are often our own worst critic especially when we have experienced failure. “Compassion – Wishing that oneself or others be free from suffering. Empathy in the face of suffering, and the wish to alleviate it. From the Latin, com(with) and pati (suffer).

In this program, you will learn the key principles and practices of self- compassion. Research has shown that these techniques can help improve our emotional well-being, improve our ability to cope with life’s challenges, lower levels of anxiety and depression and lead to more satisfying personal relationships. This nurturing programme uses meditations, group discussion, and experiential exercises, to explore the following themes:

  • Bringing mindfulness and self-compassion into daily life;
  • Handling difficult situations and emotions with greater ease;
  • Motivating ourselves with kindness rather than self-criticism;
  • Growing and sustaining compassion for others to improve relationships;
  • Practicing the art of savouring and self-appreciation;
  • Exploring the role of self-compassion in caregiver fatigue;
  • Developing an understanding of the science around how self-compassion works.

Cultivating self-compassion in this way can fundamentally shift how we relate to ourselves. Instead of meeting our imperfections and challenges with self- blame and -criticism, we can bring a kind and mindful attention to our experiences (thoughts, emotions, and sensations) and a sense of love and care to ourselves, right in the midst of difficult situations. With practice, we can strengthen this inner quality of presence, connectedness, and kindness to improve emotional well-being and build resilience.

Self-compassion includes: 1. Self-kindness Vs Self-criticism; 2. Common humanity Vs Self-isolation 3. Mindfulness Vs emotional entanglement.” The course fee for the full 9 session official MSC programme includes all handouts/course materials and refreshments. I also offer online/telephone support throughout the course. On completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance.


  • No prior mindfulness or self-compassion experience is required -- but the course can be attended as a follow-on for those who’ve completed an 8-week mindfulness course.
  • There is up to 1⁄2 hour per day of home practice of mindfulness and self-compassion exercises recommended during the course.
  • Handouts and guided meditations will be provided.

About your host, Minding Emotions

Patricia is a mother of three teenagers. She has been practising meditation for over 20 years. Motherhood has allowed Patricia to recognise the importance for cultivating emotional balance at a young age.

Patricia's academic background in Psychology, Fine Arts and Art History has given her an insight into the human condition. She is an Artist, Yoga, TeenYoga and Mindfulness teacher. She is a certified CEB Cultivating Emotional Balance teacher, a Breathworks accredited Mindfulness teacher for MfH Mindfulness for Health and Stress and a trained MSC Mindfulness Self Compassion teacher. Patricia had the honour to have trained with Eve Ekman and Alan Wallace for the CEB program, Dr Chris Irons for the Foundations of Compassion Focused Therapy and with Dr. Christopher Germer one of the founders of the MSC Mindfulness Self Compassion program. She has a particular interest in taking emotional balance to Teens, Children and their entire ecosystem (parents and teachers). This has taken Patricia to train as an MBSR-T Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Teens teacher and Mindfulness for Schools Educator.

She practices mindfulness and adheres to the mindfulness teacher good practice guidelines. She teaches to both individuals and groups. When she is not teaching, she is hanging out with family, meditating, practising yoga, laughing at something with her partner or friends or maybe even dancing. She is inspired by quotes and poems.
