What you will do

We live in a society of ambition, striving and achieving. Although there are huge benefits from these traits, we also live in a society of stress, anxiety, burn out, exhaustion. Many of us seem to have forgotten that we need rest and space in our bodies and our minds.

A Perspectives on Psychological Science study describes mindfulness as “the non-judgmental awareness of experiences in the present moment.”

What benefits can you expect to notice from mediation and mindfulness?

  • Increases energy levels;
  • Clarity of thinking and focus;
  • Lowers stress levels, anxiety and can drastically help those suffering from depression;
  • Allows for clarity of mind and better understanding of our self and behaviours;
  • Meditation can actually result in brain changes that can protect against mental illness. The meditation practice is linked with increased signalling connections in the brain, something called axonal density, as well as increased protective tissue around the axons in the anterior cingulate brain region;
  • Lowers rates of stress, anxiety and depression;
  • Helps you to release tension of past and future, and brings you into the present moment;
  • Helps with quality sleep and reduces insomnia.

This workshop will look at the multitude of benefits that arise from a regular mediation practice. You will be taught specific techniques to help you with your mediation, and receive resources. Louise will guide you through a yoga practice to prepare your body for mediation. We will then move into a guided mediation to ease into the practice and get familiar with how it feels to sit in stillness and silence. After the mediation, Louise will give you further techniques to practice mindfulness on a day-to-day basis, even while walking and sitting in the office!

Expect to move inwards, become aware of the body and the mind, and feel relaxed and peaceful.

Louise comes to our office on a Wednesday morning for a restorative yoga and meditation class. It's the highlight of my week, and perfect for a mid-week intention and refocus. Before Louise, I had never done yoga and only dabbled in Headspace. The difference in meditating in a group, rather than online, is huge! I have found that when using an app I break concentration much easier and give up. The yoga also is slow, easy and meditative. Perfect for beginners. Louise brings these beautiful scented sprays and balms for your temples which make any space into a calming one. It's a nice touch that I haven't come across in other yoga and meditaton classes. Louise is really accommodating, with just the right does of 'yogi'. Everyone adores her, and we look forward to the class every week!

Huckletree West session - I have now done 4 sessions (having never done anything like this before) and am working towards my goal of being able to touch my toes from standing! I play a lot of other sport through the week and these sessions are helping with injury/recovery. The teacher has been really helpful (especially since I am a complete novice) and the Wednesday session is a great way to break up the week! Thanks!

About your host, Loup Yoga

Loup Yoga, run by Louise, aims to support and encourage people to live healthily, happily and humanely. It does this through yoga, which includes the physical practice, breath work, meditation and mindful decision-making.

Many figures have influenced Loup Yoga's ideology and philosophy, cumulating in this venture. It draws on the wisdom of the yoga sutras of Patanjali, the anthropological studies of Yuval Noah Harari and Michael Pollan's insight into where nature and culture intersect. The most important aspect is to translate the wisdom and guidance available to us into practical action for tangible results.

After finishing a Master's Degree at Edinburgh University, Louise started working for the Human Rights Commission in London, before studying Arabic in Oman to compliment her job as Editor and Research Developer. On returning to the UK, Louise decided to re-focus on education. Having previously worked in special needs schools, Louise has a passion for developing the education environment to make it accessible for all. Louise worked at KIDS charity in London, developing Education, Health and Care Plans for disabled children to ensure they were receiving quality education to foster development.

Inspired by her experiences at KIDS, Louise became fascinated by education in the context of International Development, being passionate about playing her part towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Subsequently, Louise moved to Ghana with International Service to run a project fighting against disability discrimination, with a focus on sustainable inclusivity of the disabled community within education and society. Louise began practising yoga in 2015, and found it to be a transformative practice.

Despite remaining passionate about humanitarian work, Louise felt compelled to complete a 200 hour Ashtanga Vinyasa Teacher Training course with All Yoga in Indonesia, and is now working full time to spread the powerful and transformative effects of Yoga.
