Course objectives:

This group is moving into its second term, with some returning students considering writing projects and readying themselves for more in-depth learning. We are looking forward to meeting new members to the group.

During the spring term, we will continue to examine the nuts and bolts of creative writing in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and uncover the various aspects of being a creative writer.

Those who join us will benefit from all that previous students have learned and further teaching that deepens the understanding of what it takes to write successful narratives.
Each week, we will explore the text of established authors in the context of each week's subject.

All this will be done in an environment where writers are encouraged to support each other's process by sharing, listening, and giving feedback. This is also an opportunity to share your ideas and be supported by your tutor in the editing and critique process.

We will develop techniques such as:
Character,
Setting,
Story Arc,
Dialogue,
Research,
The editing process,
Feedback and critique,
Genre and Form.
Foreshadowing and symbolism

This is an LGBTQ-friendly environment.

Beginners and intermediates:

The course aims to reach a broad scope of capability. We welcome those who have a deeper understanding of literature and writing, but equally, if you wish to come and learn from a completely new perspective, you are more than welcome to attend.

A good grasp of the English language is essential.

Please note: Half-term is on the 12th of February. There are 11 sessions in this term

Ruth V Jarvis is a BA (Hons) author, editor and script consultant. Her creative writing focuses on trauma narrative expressed through poetry, feminist, historical, and creative non-fiction. She understands the key components to develop and encourage others to build a solid foundation in their writing practice and bring their stories to life.
