You will be using peyote stitch to create these beautiful, colourful beaded rings. You’ll be working from Miesje’s pre-designed patterns so no previous experience necessary. Join us for a creative patchwork and quilting experience! This class is ideal for those of you, who are new to patchwork quilting or those of you, who want to explore experimental ways of working. Techniques will combine hand and machine sewing skills. If you have never used a sewing machine before, we recommend attending our Beginners Sewing class (introduction to using a sewing machine) In the morning you will create a series of sample 'blocks'. In the afternoon, piece together the blocks, add wadding and quilting stitches and assemble your own personalised 'envelope style' cushion cover or start a larger project (such a quilt) to be completed at home or at our fortnightly 'Craft Club' On completion of the class, participants should confidently be able to: Have an understand of patchworking and quilting techniques and how to 'break the rules' Use a machine to piece together fabric pieces creatively to form a new fabric Experiment with hand 'running stitch' the basis of most quilting designs. Explore colour, texture and creative expression using textile remnants. See the potential to translate ideas into practical items such as cushions, quilts, garments or expressive textile art pieces. Sunday 28th May, 10.00-12.00 In this Quilting Workshop with Lauren MacDonald, you will learn how to stitch together quilt layers entirely by hand. Quilts are made up of a top layer (usually patchwork), a middle layer (fluffy wadding), and a bottom layer (usually plain fabric or simple patchwork). During the session you'll be working with "whole cloth" samples, meaning the top layer is made of a single, simple piece of cloth instead of patchwork. You'll learn how to prepare these layers, mark your lines to quilt, quilt the layers together, and finish the edges of your sample by hand. Lauren will be combining textile history and culture with practical skills, no knowledge of patchwork is needed. Lauren MacDonald is a multidisciplinary designer, researcher, and founder of the textiles studio Working Cloth. She has a background in material culture, textile science, and fashion, and her practice is focused on traditional textile handcrafts. Her first book In Pursuit of Color: From fungi to fossil fuels: uncovering the origins of the world's most famous dyes will be out in July 2023. The workshop is open to a maximum of 14 participants (age 15+) on a first come, first served basis. Attendance at the workshop costs £65.
