Creative Nature HQ

In this willow weaving workshop, we will look at willow in its dry and wet states and begin to handle and learn techniques to manipulate it. once we have a good understanding, we will then immerse ourselves into the wonderful rhythm of weaving. 

You can work on your own on a small piece, or in a friend or family group to create more ambitious scaled work. Remember it has to fit in your vehicle at the end of the session!

At Creative Nature HQ, we differ from other crafts courses in that we also give opportunities to groups or businesses to create artworks that can be donated to community groups and schools. You take home unique memories, new skills and an improved wellbeing.

Each participant has an allocated amount of willow . If your piece extends a lot further, an additional charge may be incurred for the extra willow needed to finish your piece. We can decide this together during the making process.

Your tutor, Stephen,  has been working with willow for over 30 years and trained as a sculptor and Forest School teacher.

Sculptural Willow Weaving

As a total novice, I did not know what to expect but was curious about willow weaving. Stephen was very personable and we had good chats while we were working. He showed me a range of willow rods and how they could be used and by the end of the afternoon we had produced a marvellous willow sculpture. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to try out sculptural willow weaving.  The venue is set amidst an industrial area right on the Thames, so is very atmospheric.

An introduction to weaving large sculptural forms in willow.

This regular class in spoon carving introduces you to the art of carving with an axe, a knife and a crook knife. 
By carving a spoon, you can focus on becoming familiar with the tools of the craft without the pressure of knowing what to carve. 
As you gain confidence with the tools, you begin to build a relationship with your small scale carving and understand the subtle and addictive qualities of this new hobby.

We will use green wood, freshly cut with a high moisture content. This is a beautiful and easy way to carve wood.

You are supported through the whole process and encouraged to explore carving in your own way and at your own pace. This is an exercise in slowing down and settling your attention.

All tools and materials are supplied and at the end of the session you will have your first carving started.

Creative Nature HQ is located within Thames-Side Studios, a 7-acre site of studios and workshops occupied by makers, artists, craftspeople and designers.
We are right next to the river Thames and there is plenty of free parking on site.

There are regular sessions on Saturday mornings and afternoons and on weekday evenings.

He encourages your own artistic style to develop and guides without imposing his view. His anything and everything is possible attitude is refreshing. Using your hands deepens your appreciation of what’s actually involved in the process and at the end of the session, you have a spoon that you have bonded with and that will last forever! The venue is clean warm and is well equipped with everything you need to carve and make a spoon. I can’t recommend this course highly enough and I’d love to go back!!

Stephen was a really nice guy and is very knowledgable. The class had quite a meditative spin and made for a pleasant morning! My spoon didn't end up being anything special, I didn't even get to hollowing out the bowl, but I really enjoyed myself and it was great to learn some new skills. The work does get quite tiring, but if you aren't very strong Stephen had other strategies for carving that were a little easier on the arms. Can't recommend this enough if you're looking to try something a little bit different.

Terrarium Workshop - Slim Cork Jar

Come and enjoy this 2.5 hour workshop getting creative and jewellery making. Craft your very own hammered sterling silver ring, whether as a gift for somebody or a treat for yourself. Hosted by close expert jewellers.

They will guide you through the process of making a ring using traditional goldsmithing techniques such as annealing, forging, soldering, and filing to name but a few. In this workshop you will have the option of making either a wide hammered band or two fine hammered stacking rings (as pictured). Over the course of the class you will have plenty of opportunity to practice your newfound skills, as demonstrated by the jewellers throughout.

There’ll be plenty of opportunity for one-to-one interaction with the jewellers during your session.

We offer gold plating as an optional extra which can be requested and paid for at the end of the workshop. Choose from yellow gold, rose gold or black rhodium plating for your finished ring(s) - prices range from £20 - £40. Please note this service takes up to 3 weeks and you will need to leave your ring(s) with us, which can then be collected or posted out.

Learn how to turn a wooden bowl using a foot-powered pole lathe at our woodland workshop in the city. Suitable for beginners and improvers.

Learn a heritage craft at the London Greenwood workshop.

You will use a foot-powered pole lathe to turn your own wooden bowl from locally grown wood.

Starting by learning good axe technique to prepare your bowl blank then how to set up a pole lathe you will move on to master the use of bowl turning hook tools.

Powering your lathe by foot you will create a functional wooden bowl to take home with you.

We will also talk about drying, oiling and caring for your bowl as well as selecting materials and how to continue.

This drop in session is suitable for beginner  and intermediate sewers. Please note these are women only classes.

If have never used a sewing machine before you will be taught how to use the machine and make bags, neck lines or small garments according to your own aims and interests.

You can also come and work on your own unique garment projects, with the guidance and help of a professional at your own pace.

Students have successfully created a variety of garments like jackets, shirts, skirts and even wedding dresses!

The studio has a domestic over locker , various machines and equipment but you are welcome to bring your own.

Our books and references can only be used in-studio. If you’d like to use them for a longer period of time, we recommend booking a bundle of classes.

Not a sewer? No problem! Bring along your knitting, crochet, weaving, macrame or other crafting project. Our expert sewing teachers may not be able to support you to the same extent but we’re sure you’ll love the extra space, new pals and the freedom to be messy!

In this class that honours the traditional Japanese art of fixing with gold, an experienced and friendly teacher from Art4Space will guide you every step of the way so that you leave with beautiful symbolic pottery to treasure.

As well as enjoying the hands-on experience with all the materials provided, you will also learn a little about the history and philosophy of Kintsugi. We create up to two classic Japanese bowls. You also have the option to bring your own crockery (vase, plate, bowl, cup) and we can explore how to fix this the best way.

Starting out with an explanation on how this form of welding works, settings and parts on the machine, how to position yourself and hold the torch.
You will then have a go at striking the arc on a piece of steel, running a bead without filler rod before moving on to learning how to move and dab filler rod in to the weld puddle.

Dan will then talk you through the various types of weld joints, show you how to tack two pieces together and then run a full weld across the joint.

At this point there will be a break before you come back and have a go at welding an outside corner joint. This is in preparation for the metal dice that you will weld together yourself and take home with you to finish off however you like.

For a small surcharge you can have the dice powder coated in any colour you like. Or just leave it raw with the welding marks on it!

This workshop will be focused on the creation and personalisation of rings and pendants and led by Stööki's jewellery technologist Nadia Abbas.

In this workshop you will:

Get an insight in to the jewellery making process
Receive a wax ring or pendant template to customise with your own design
Get a tutorial covering a range of jewellery making techniques

The aim is to have a finished wax master at the end of the workshop that can be taken home, but there is also the option of turning your personalised wax ring or pendant into a finished jewellery piece.

This is a drop in class to learn the crafty skill of pattern cutting. During this class you will have the opportunity to make a pattern from a block , adjust a ready-made pattern or even make your own block with free hand cutting style.

As a drop-in session, some, but not all of the points below will be covered over 3 hours - this will depend on your ability and how many sessions you have attended in the past:

Learn to copy your favourite garment to get continued enjoyment out of a garment that fits like a dream.   In this class you will learn how to copy a garment on paper.  If we have time, you may get part way into cutting in cloth.  Cloth is unavailable through me, so please do bring your own.  Ability to complete this depends on the quickness in completing each stage and how detailed the garment is.  If you wish to sew up the garment i do recommend 3+ hours.
You can purchase such bundle hours through the Learn to make a garment bundle class, which are available for 3 hours plus.

This class is for all genders and ages.   Choose from 1 to 1 or group class.

Learn to pattern make a basic block to fit your measurements.   This 2.5 hour session  will focus on making a paper block to confirm the size.  Depending on time left we may be able to add a sleeve block or trousers, you will need an extra hour at least.

This class is for all genders and ages.  A fit block is made to your base body shape for the type of garment you wish to make from it.  Choose from 1 to 1 or group class.

The fit block paper pattern can be manipulated into a shirt, dress or even a jacket for the more advance learner.  If you would like further tuition on this let me know and we can arrange the details.  Be aware that the more advance the garment the longer it will take to complete with tuition.
