2.5 hour class

Daytime

This class helps people make more of a sewing machine, enhance previously acquired sewing machine skills and is a natural follow on class to any of our Beginner Sewing classes or for those who already have some basic sewing machine skills but would like to progress further.

In this class

In this morning class you will learn how to insert zips, make buttonholes and add bias binding (and also learn what that is) whilst creating your own stylish 'Utility Roll' (great keeping tidy your sewing notions, brushes, make up etc) designed by your teacher Barley Massey.

Now you can

  • understand how to use different accessories that accompany domestic sewing machines, such as zipper, buttonhole feet.
  • stitch different sizes and styles of buttonholes
  • Use bias binding as a means of finishing raw fabric edges
  • leave ready to take on that 'to be altered' drawer at home!

Keep

Take home your personally designed and made 'utility roll'.

Did you know?

According to his Elias Howe's mother's family history - the man who invented the sewing machine in mid 1800's, the idea for the eye of the needle being at the pointed end came by way of a dream. In this dream Elias Howe was being threatened by a ferocious King, under threat of death, to succeed in inventing a machine that sewed. He was given 24 hours or he would die.

I simply loved the class.. Didn't feel like leaving. Barley is such a passionate teacher and an ambitious one too. She taught each one of us very patiently and made sure we worked diligently. Everyone left with a happy face, skilled hands and a completed product. I would highly recommend her classes.

Barley was very good explaining the techniques for sewing and assembling all the different parts of the utility roll. She was also very good at looking after everyone, and making sure that we had her support and attention when we needed it. The class was a good size: there were 9 of us. There was also plenty of fabrics, zips, buttons, bias binding and ribbons to choose from. There were a couple of ladies who brought their own sewing machine, which is handy as Barley showed them how to do buttonholes and other techniques using their machine. It was a well run class in a lovely crafty space, and the class is something that has spurred me on to do more sewing !

About your host, Fabrications

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
