Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".

Fantastic class - I love my dress! Barley is great, she is very patient and talented and went the extra mile to make sure I learnt the various steps and created a beautiful dress. This is my second class with her and will definitely be back for more!

Milou was a really inspiring teacher and her knowledge of embroidery is impressive! I left feeling like I had a solid understanding of the basic stitches I needed and how to create and transfer a pattern to a garment. Overall a really fun and chilled out class - would definitely recommend to anyone who is a complete beginner like me!

This was so much fun, I may well have found a new hobby! I was dreaming about Shibori knotting and folding (or should I say 'maki'!). What a relaxing way to spend an evening (worth travelling north of the river for!) Rob is a great, patient teacher and very inspiring.

I found Barley a super cool host, and she was very supportive of my needs - I'm less capable with a machine, so she managed to tailor towards lots of focus on handsewing, which was great for me. I really appreciated that.

I really enjoyed this workshop and learned the basics of crochet in a relaxed and welcoming environment. The course tutor was lovely and made lot of effort to offer us one to one tuition without leaving anyone out or without something to do for long. Only not 5 stars because the course started late.

This is an excellent beginners course, I really enjoyed it and was so surprised by how much I learned in a day! All supplies were provided, yarn, basic crochet stitches booklet and a great quality hook. Our teacher Tona has an amazing talent and passion for crochet and you can tell she really loves to teach others. She is very easy to learn from and has a great personality. Fabrications shop where the course is held is a fabulous little shop with a great ethos. Sustainability and supporting local and national suppliers being very important them. Loved this course and can't wait for the next class.

Fabrications shop where the course is held is a fabulous little shop with a great ethos. Sustainability and supporting local and national suppliers being very important them. Absolutely loved this class and was surprised by how much I learnt in one day! Barley will take you through how to set up the machine, try different stitches and two different hen types and then in the afternoon make a bag or a pillow from scratch including how to do patchwork or appliqué! I would highly recommend if you want to learn about the basics of sewing. My only feedback would be that the class was a little big for a small room particularly on one of the hottest days of the year!!

Fabrications is doing a great job at offering quality, full-day workshops from Rob Jones. Stencils design requires attention to details, time, precision. It is my second workshop there with Rob, around Indigo dyeing - and it's always a blast. He's passionate about his art, the Japanese craftmanship & had wonderful stencils to showcase & share. We ended up creating our own, as well as experimenting and creating different designs on samples and tote bags.

I loved it!! In those few hours David taught me so many great techniques of how to use the sewing machine. It's absolute great for beginners, but if you're advanced David will give you plenty of advice in how to make an old man's shirt to something beautiful.

Barley was very good explaining the techniques for sewing and assembling all the different parts of the utility roll. She was also very good at looking after everyone, and making sure that we had her support and attention when we needed it. The class was a good size: there were 9 of us. There was also plenty of fabrics, zips, buttons, bias binding and ribbons to choose from. There were a couple of ladies who brought their own sewing machine, which is handy as Barley showed them how to do buttonholes and other techniques using their machine. It was a well run class in a lovely crafty space, and the class is something that has spurred me on to do more sewing !

There was 7 students, but despite this nobody was left with out help and guidance when they needed it. I made a lot of mistakes :( but despite this I was guided back on track by Barley- I am quite proud of the finished product and new skills gained. Would throughly recommend this course !

Great little course to get a little confidence in altering clothing. Covered slip stitching, adding darts to make clothes smaller and adding patches to make clothes bigger. We discussed ideas on the kinds of changes you could make and what items could be used to make other items. Eg long shirt into a short skirt and boob tube. I personally needed more info on what types of stitches to use where and cheats on how to make clothes smaller without unpicking everything, which the tutor was happy to discuss with me individually. Overall, very informative but maybe not as advanced as I would have liked... However others were complete beginners so they probably got more out of it.

The course was super and I along with 6 other people had an enjoyable day. The work room smelled of body odour quite badly and could do with a fan or air con unit as it is in the basement. I learnt a lot in the day and altered three garments. Shortened the sleeves on a jacket, took in the waist on a a pair of jeans and took up the hemming on some trousers. Barley was an excellent teacher and gave us all a lot of confidence to tackle projects we would not dare to previously.

Really great course with Barley - this has improved my confidence massively and I feel I have learnt lots of professional tips for altering my own clothes. The best part is that I can now wear two pairs of trousers that have been gathering dust in my wardrobe for years! Thank you Barley!

This was a great class with a mix of different alterations from all the 'students'. There were varying degrees of ambition as to what people wanted to do with their garments, and this was great for someone like me who's not very imaginative! Barley was brilliant at advising people on how they can manipulate the fabric to fit better or to change how the garment hangs on the person or to change how it looks completely. What I liked most was being able to also learn about the skills that other people were using to make their alterations, so my learning wasn't limited to what I was doing for my own garments. The class has definitely got me thinking more creatively about how I can alter my clothes.

I attended Bella’s wonderful embroidery workshop which I found to be one of the best workshops on embroidery that I've attended – it far exceeded my expectations. There were lots of demos, one to one support and feedback. I learnt so much on the day. There was a lot of thought and care taken to put together the high-quality kit and instructions. I enjoyed myself on the day – the hours flew by. I will look out for future workshops from Bella.

Such a brilliant introduction to knitting! I have just finished the second session and I'm moving on to the third. Each session builds on the one before and you are given individual help depending on what problems you are having or how quickly you are picking things up. Barley is a great teacher! The space is lovely with tea and biscuits and the music is eclectic and a good background to the class. A lovely group of people in the class and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone! Thank you.

Ayda is an excellent, patient teacher: I left feeling inspired and confident to continue this crap. Unfortunately we did not get on to adding a second ball of wool, but we did get through a lot! I left the class and immediately got a second hook and new ball of wool so I could get cracking with my first project ASAP.

A great class! I was completely new to crochet and the teacher guided individually each one of us, teaching us at our own speed all the foundation of crochet. It was a wonderful experience to practice and learn in a very relax enviroment. I didn't even notice the time passing by as I was so concentrated in the art of crochet. Btw great food for lunch; just outside the shop you have the market with amazing vegan food! Couldn't give any better feedback. A recommended anyone that is a true beginner to take this class. A must!
