What you will do
Six session course
You will begin by constructing a simple skirt pattern tailored to your own measurements. Then you test and tweak the pattern by making a calico 'toile' before making a skirt in your chosen fabric.
Throughout the course you will learn about fabric, pattern cutting, sewing and designing as well as many small details which make your skirt a success. You are encouraged to work at your own pace and to develop your own style.
Your teacher will guide you through each step of constructing, for example darts, seam allowance, fabric choices, sewing a zip and hemming as well as the techniques and ideas that make the garment 'yours'.
Once you have developed your skills with the skirt, you can continue to attend the course and Christina will work with you to create garments of your own choice. There have been many beautiful garments created in the Stitch Studio from prom dresses to work outfits and everything in between.
The groups are small (a maximum of 4/5) and there is always a lovely atmosphere of collaboration and fun to them. You can join at any point during the term, get in touch to discuss if this is possible, you would pay pro-rata at £22 per session (the rest of the term would be due in advance).

About your host, Stitch Club
Stitch Club is a place to relax, learn and create. Each workshops is tailored to the attendees' requirements: whether you are a beginner or wanting to build on existing skills, whether your style is totally practical, slightly wonky or somewhere in between; they will work with you to achieve your best.
The workshop leaders have many years of both industry and teaching experience. Most workshops are led by Sam Harvey, a practising textile artist who has been running Stitch Club for over 10 years. Dress/Pattern Making workshops are run by Christina Figur, who studied Tailoring and Fashion Design in Norway, Italy and England before working as a designer for the likes of Top Shop and Paul Smith and who brings a wonderful Nordic aesthetic to our work. Stitch Club's background ensure that they appreciate the beauty and value in the quirky details; in making unique items and not just mass produced pieces.
Stitch Club loves passing on skills that they know will be useful, not just because you can drive a sewing machine or sew on a button, but because it helps you to relax and unwind in a mindful and creative way that is a fundamental human thing to do. Making, especially in a group, is one of the best things to do when you need some time out.
You do not need to bring anything to your first session. The basic skirt sewing block and calico are included but you will be required to bring your own fabric for the finished garments. You will discuss your fabric requirements during the first sessions. All equipment, including sewing machines and an overlocker, as well as sundry materials and refreshments will be provided. You should have basic sewing machine skills for this course. We can get you up and running with a sewing machine in a separate session, get in touch to discuss this.
