What you will do
3 hour class
If you're keen to explore a fascinating part of Japanese culture and learn about a beautiful dyeing technique why not head to trendy Hackney for this awesomely authentic workshop of Shibori? This class is a natural follow on to our beginner Shibori classes at Fabrications.
In this class:
Focus on learning two more complex traditional Shibori patterns.
Yanagi - "Willow pattern" - this is a Shibori binding technique that results in a pattern that looks like willow. You will learn pleating and binding around a core and can either make a traditional pattern with kumo spiderwebs or one with hitta bird binding.
Hinode - "Sunrise pattern" - this is a stitched and bound technique that results in a pattern that looks like a series of sunrises. You will learn how to bind your piece around a core to produce either a pattern with a reserved ground (all white apart from the suns) or one with the traditional binding marks. Learn how to set up and use the Indigo dye bath.
Finish with a beautiful indigo tie-dye creation.
Rob Jones, your teacher, will be guiding you through all of these techniques as well as through the practical methods to make sure your finished article is perfect.
Now you can
Pull off some fabulous new looks - all with your very own patterns and style. Add Shibori to your already outrageous range of talents; Add a Japanese-inspired piece of decoration to your home to go with that old edition of Shogun.

About your host, Fabrications
Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
All materials are provided. Although we provide shirts and rubber gloves, it is advisable to not wear your favourite clothes and shoes!
