These morning classes are designed as an informal access to our pottery studio. Laura teaches Friday morning classes. Laura has been learning ceramics since it was free to do it at university! She's also got a teaching degree and now teaches pottery part time on a regular basis, while working on her own ceramics in her home studio. There is no level of ability required for this class, so you can come as a complete novice looking to start a new skill, or, if you've tried pottery before but want to try out something different, then this is suited for you as well. 

These classes are need led, so whether you want a go on the wheel, or you need to improve your hand building, you can get involved in whatever method you would like!

This evening is a fun Friday evening for beginners looking to improve their skills. It's organised on a drop in basis, so you don't have to commit to anything, but you can return to this class if you'd like. On a single session, you are unlikely to finish a complete piece of work, so you may need to book a few sessions if you'd like to complete a project from start to finish.

Pottery Workshop

On this throwing workshop, you will learn a little about the properties of clay and the importance of wedging. You will also learn how to centre, open and pull up the walls of your pot. There will be a maximum of seven people on this throwing workshop and each person will have their own dedicated wheel for the entire length of the session. There will also be two teachers with a teacher/student ratio of 1 teacher to 3.5 students. Please note, this is a group class. If you are looking for 1 to 1 teaching (one teacher to one participant) or 1 to 2 (one teacher to two participants) then you may find that a private session works best for you.

You can keep your best pot to take home, after it has been fired and glazed for you.  Please note that the last 10 minutes of the class is dedicated to studio practice, which involves cleaning of your wheel and tools.

What happens to your pots after they have been thrown?
At the end of the workshop you will choose your best piece or pot to keep. Two days after the workshop, your pot will be turned (trimmed) on the wheel for you.  Your pot will then be put on a shelf to dry for several days. Once dry, it will be ready for it’s first bisque firing in the kiln. After the bisque fire, your pot will be glazed and once again put through the kiln, but this time for the final glaze firing.

As you can see, your wheel throwing  experience is only a small part of a much, much longer and very labour intensive process. Turning (trimming and shaping your pot on the wheel) and glazing are all part of the making process and just as important as throwing on the wheel.

When your work is ready for collection, usually two or three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces! Collection is from Sak Beh Pottery and the collection dates are listed on the Sak Beh Website. So please check the Sak Beh Website for your collection date by clicking the tab, collection of pots. We don’t send out emails as they tend to go to spam folders or are not read.

Due to limited shelf and storage space, pots or work that remain uncollected one month after notification will (sadly) be disposed of.

(If you wish to keep a second pot, there will be an extra charge of £8.)

We offer a complimentary self serve tea bar with a selection of snacks.


Intensive Wheel Throwing Workshop

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

We run this class every Tuesday as a drop-in class, but we also run 5 week courses for £120 plus VAT or 10 week courses for £230 plus VAT. Discover the joy of ceramics with our Hand-Building and Under-Glazing workshop at Stuff And Fings Ceramics. Express your unique style and persona by playing with colour, shape, and texture to create both decorative or functional pieces.

Throughout the workshop, you'll learn basic hand-building techniques, to make and decorate your own pieces, and gain the confidence to bring your ideas to life. With individual attention given, our relaxed beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect place to find your happy place and take the leap of inspiration to make your own personalised ceramic masterpieces.

The Session

In the first part of the session, we'll dive into the basics of creating a simple hand-built form with a short demo and chat, and you'll have the opportunity to take inspiration from ideas you've collected.

Then, in the second part, you’ll have the chance to unleash your creativity and bring your unique piece to life by decorating with underglazes.

Optional light homework will be provided prior to the first session, so you can fully immerse yourself in this hands-on experience. All details will be provided in the confirmation email.

These are 2.5hr sessions. Personal and individual guidance is given throughout.

All clay, tools, underglazes are provided and included in the fee. You are welcome to make as many pieces, as the time provides. Please note 1 piece you'd like to keep is included in the fee. Any additional pieces you'd like to keep incur a £3 (per piece) charge, payable on the day, please remember to bring cash.

Introduction to Watercolour Painting: Birds of Paradise Study

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of which enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

Everyone will be provided with:
Sets of 5 traditional Japanese hand tools
1 x 4mm A4 Shina ply woodblock - slightly smaller block for evening session
Blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3 x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc. - Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes are provided for all prints to take away at the end of the session.

Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words
from Alex on his printmaking career.

Throughout the session,  Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone's prints will be individually wrapped in sheets of tissue paper and rolled up into tubes for safe passage home.

Learn Woodcut Printmaking With An Artist

You can make up to 3 pieces using these skills, which will then be bisque-fired, dipped in our beautiful stoneware glazes, and fired again. Most of our glaze choices are dinnerware safe. The results are stunning! You receive your posted creations within 4-6 weeks, imagine the magical moment when you open your box to reveal the results!

The vessels/pots can be for functional ware or try small sculptural work. You are welcome to come with your own ideas during the mindful 2.5 hours of making with the full support of an experienced ceramic tutor to help you realise your creative design ideas. No experience is necessary as the session is beginner-friendly as well for the more advanced participants.

The popular venue is our stunning Art4Space community arts centre, which is an inclusive, supportive, respectful, welcoming, safe space for everyone. Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue. Please note it is £54 per person for 2-2.5-hour workshop, plus travel expenses. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

Fancy yourself as the next Banksy? Or just want to learn how to create a piece of spray can art in a safe, relaxed and fun environment? Then join in this street art tour and graffiti workshop!

One of Alternative London's expert street artist guides will take you on a graffiti and street art walking tour (1.30 - 1.45hrs) of East London where you'll see some of the World's finest street art by Banksy, ROA, Shepard Fairey, Jimmy C, Invader, Stik and many many more. Then, after a refreshment break it's back to the Alternative London for a 2.15hrs workshop to try it for yourself!

All welcome regardless of artistic ability as the Alternative London team will teach you spray can techniques and all you need to know to draw, cut and create your own single or multi layered stencil and build your own unique piece of street art.

Graffiti Workshop with Street Art Tour: Full Session

This is a great introduction to pottery in a small class with lots of teacher support. There is a maximum of seven students to two teachers.  That’s 3.5 students to one teacher. If you are looking for one to one attention please consider a Private Class.

As an introduction to pottery, this class comprises of both throwing on the wheel and hand building. You will have your own dedicated wheel. We also offer beginner classes devoted solely to wheel throwing and beginner classes solely devoted to hand building. But if you just want to give everything a go in a relaxed and bright studio, then this is a perfect first step into pottery.

This is a fun class and you will be shown how to centre your clay on the wheel, open your pot and pull up the walls. You will also be shown how to make pots using hand building techniques involving the manipulation of clay, using the hand only. These techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building.

At the end of your class you can keep your best pot which will be fired twice and glazed for you in our lovely studio white glaze. Your pot will be ready for collection three weeks after the class and the collection dates will be listed on the Sak Beh Pottery website. Students get a unique opportunity to visit Colin McCallum's railway arch studio in the super creative neighbourhood of Hackney, located in a street with a long history of artists. Colin studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art and has remained in East London for many years as well as living in Barcelona for 14 years.

Colin is an award winning artist who has shown his art all over the world and has many international collectors.

In this fun and informative 2 hour class, students will be introduced to Colin's art and he will discuss his techniques in detail. You will get a real insight into the life of a professional artist too!

The class is suitable for beginners and those who have tried painting before and want more guidance from a professional. Colin will provide a large array of acrylic and spray paints and begin with showing some examples of his methods on paper. Each student gets the chance to work on paper and finally will be given their own canvas to create the final work which they can take home (if the canvas is not dry they can return to collect at a later date).
