What happens in this class?

As a starting point, for centuries the traditionally trained art student has drawn from casts and sculpture. Following this practice, Nichola Eddery is offering an introductory traditional drawing class in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This workshop will be taught by Nichola and will offer her unique blend of traditional training through drawing directly from the V&A's sculptural masterpieces. Her classes will be modelled on 19th-century French atelier practices that were derived from the Renaissance Masters' traditions. Through a step-by-step methodology, Nichola will provide demonstrations and exercises to help each student learn the beginning stages…

Things to remember

Please bring an A4 or A3 sketchbook, H, HB & 2B pencils, a putty rubber and barrel sharpener. Nichola suggests bringing some music to listen to while drawing; this will help one to concentrate when people are around. Stools will be provided and a knitting needle for measuring.

I loved the class, it started on time and was quite therapeutic. Nichola was really helpful in terms of technique and skill. She taught us the very basics of proportions and perspective, and was really helpful when we weren't getting things right.

Always wanted to try a museum drawing class but not knowing how to draw wass quite nervous. As it happens this was perfect - Nichola Eddery came across as charming, talented and very professional and the small group size meant plenty of one-on-one guidance. I look forward to another class!

Nichola is a lovely teacher who gives feedback and great guidance. The venue is of course great too. I would definitely go again.
Regina - 10 June 2019
The workshop was very interesting as we learned a different process of drawing sculptures. Nichola is very well trained in her specialty and had lots of knowledge to impart. She is also very patient and has such a nice demeanour and personality.

I learned that I have so much to learn and, while daunting, this was very helpful. Her materials helped me to focus more on the preparation rather than on the actual drawing and I understood that I had not paid enough attention to this in my work. Nichola is an excellent teacher because: she comes prepared, her materials are clear and unambiguous, her explanations are clear, she circulates continuously giving each student time, and perhaps most of all, she is warm, approachable and she listens! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and wish I lived in London so I could avail of access to this level of expertise all the time. The Venue was great. Surrounded by Art and Beauty what more could you ask. It gave a further dimension of authenticity to the course. I loved every minute!

I attended a full day drawing workshop at the V and A Museum and it was wonderful! Nichola is lovely, an extremely talented lady and a great teacher! As a complete beginner, I was naturally a bit nervous but Nichola was very patient, supportive, encouraging and explained processes clearly. For those of you wanting to learn a more classical detailed approach to drawing in amazing environments I simply can't recommend Nichola and her classes enough. Overall a great inspiring experience and I hope to attend again very soon. Thank you Nichola!
