Escaping the hustle and bustle of St James’s Street, step into the quiet of Pickering Place and through a secret door in one of our historic townhouses, and down into our newest underground wine events venue, the Sussex Cellar. Elegantly spaced over two levels the Sussex Cellar combines modern architectural innovation with the feel of our historic cellars.
Friday 6th October 2017: History of Food with Will Sitwell
Join Will Lyons as he welcomes William Sitwell to this beautiful cellar for a four-course food and wine matching lunch. William Sitwell, award-winning food writer, editor and MasterChef critic will steer you through a culinary adventure through time. This exclusive lunch at Berry Bros. & Rudd will feature dishes from history – from the ancient Mesopotamia and Elizabethan England, to 20th century wartime Britain and the London restaurant scene of the 2000s. Wines to match will be selected and presented by columnist and expert Will Lyons. This lunch, created by Berry Bros. & Rudd Head Chef Stewart Turner, will showcase the tastiest dishes from past and present.
Monday 9th October 2017: Languedoc Food and Wine Matching Lunch
The Languedoc is a goldmine of vinous treasures, with rich history, fabulous terroir and parcels of old vines that create extraordinary wines – not to mention its gastronomic heritage. Over this lunch, your host Lance Jefferson will choose six wines to match a delicious three-course tasting menu prepared by Berry Bros. & Rudd Head Chef, inspired by the region’s traditional cuisine. The lunch will conclude with tea, coffee and chocolates.
Friday 20th October 2017: Classic Claret Lunch
Over a sumptuous three-course lunch, your host will introduce a little of Berry Bros. & Rudd’s colourful history – from duels to the death to Napoleon Bonaparte’s hideaway in their cellars. During the meal, you will be guided through six wines, representing classic styles from the world’s most famous wine region, Bordeaux.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain’s oldest wine and spirit merchant having first opened its doors in 1698.
Being a supplier to the Royal family since the reign of George III the company has held two Royal warrants from the reign of Edward VII. Still in its original shop at No. 3 St James’s Street London, the shop has altered little since those times providing an atmospheric experience for customers and curious visitors alike.
With over three centuries of accumulated knowledge, the close relationships developed with the world’s finest spirit and wine producers and seven Masters of Wine working for the company, Berry Bros. & Rudd provides the ultimate fine wine and spirits experience.
Whilst embracing its heritage Berry Bros. & Rudd is constantly looking to innovate; being the first wine merchant to create a website in 1994, and temperature controlled wine cellars in the 1960s. Today’s modern state of the art warehouses contain more than 8.5 million bottles of wine.
With the establishment of the warehouses in Hampshire and in the continuing spirit of innovation Berry Bros. & Rudd has made use of the original cellars underneath No.3 St James’s Street. Recently refurbished to a high standard, Berry Bros. & Rudd now runs friendly, fun and informative courses in these historic spaces. Leveraging off all the acquired expertise of the Masters of Wine and numerous other connoisseurs there is no better place to learn about wine and spirits than in the extraordinary Pickering Cellar.
Wines for this event will be chosen from Berry Bros. & Rudd’s stock at the time of the event, so most will be available to order afterwards.Please note, the dress code is smart casual.
