5 hour workshop
Bond with family members and learn a new craft while you're at it! Join this fun and creative family workshop to learn how to create a beautiful stool in wood from scratch.
In this workshop
This workshop is available for children and young people (aged 8-18) with an accompanying adult, and is £75 per pair. When booking, please select an adult place from the menu, the child ticket is free (if booking a concessionary space please select a student space instead of booking as an adult).
This workshop is a chance to spend some quality time with your family whilst also learning a new skill, or building experience in a new passion. Therefore, little or no experience is required for this workshop; simply a desire to get stuck in and learn some fun and creative carpentry techniques.
Each pair will make one stool together, and will be expertly guided through each individual process step by step. The finished stools will range from rustic to finely finished depending on the experience of each pair.
As a group you will also create an open fire and bake potatoes on it for lunch!
Now you can
- Take home a wonderfully unique and personal handmade stool
- Continue to create beautiful and fun objects as a family
- Build upon your skills by practicing the techniques learnt during the class

About your host, London Green Wood
London Green Wood is a non-profit community of woodworkers practising rural crafts in the city. Based at Abney Park Cemetery, a small woodland in Hackney, we work with green wood straight from the log and hand tools. All the wood we use has been felled locally.
We have been running events and teaching courses at our woodland workshop since 2011. We promise a beautiful setting, friendly people, the satisfaction of learning new skills and a fire when it gets chilly. We run courses for adults, for groups and for families. We also run a twice weekly 'Wood Club' community workshop and monthly volunteering days to build equipment at the workshop.
We have no indoor space and will be working outside in all weathers (under a tarp if it rains) so please come prepared. No sandals or bare feet please. Walking boots or work boots if you can, a thick sole will help to keep your feet warm in cold weather. In winter, fingerless gloves can be good, but no full gloves when working with tools. If you use reading glasses please bring them with you, you will need these when we practice tool sharpening. Tea and coffee are provided, snacks to share with the group are always welcome.
All students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
