What happens in this class?

The Kuksa (or Guksi (Sámi), Kåsa (Swedish)) is a traditional wooden cup originally made by the indigenous people of Lapland, the Sámi. It is traditionally carved from a Birch burr. In our woodland workshop, using only hand tools, you will make your own functional carved wooden cup from a locally grown tree.

This is not a beginners class, this class is suitable for someone who knows a bit about working with the grain of wood and the challenges of working endgrain. If you've never done any woodworking before we recommend that you try at least one…

London Green Wood is a non-profit cooperative of woodworkers practising rural crafts in the city. Based at Abney Park Cemetery, a small woodland in Hackney, we work with green wood straight from the log and hand tools. All the wood we use has been felled locally.

We have been running events and teaching courses at our woodland workshop since 2011. We promise a beautiful setting, friendly people, the satisfaction of learning new skills and a fire when it gets chilly. We run courses for adults, for groups and for families. We run workshop sessions for members of our cooperative…

Excellent one-day course. The tutors Jo and Dave gave clear and gentle guidance enabling us participants each to make a kuksa in sycamore, with all the necessary equipment and full safety measures in place. In this era of COVID when so many courses have gone online, it's particularly lovely to be able to do a physical class and work outside safely. Thank you!
