This class has been developed for those who have little or no experience of using a sewing machine, and who want to learn not only basic skills but develop the confidence to progress onto making clothes, cushions and other exciting things for themselves using a sewing machine.
DIY is more popular than ever today and amongst younger generations, and 'up-cycling' classes and workshops are some of the fastest-growing in the UK. People are interested in recycling and reinvigoration, so they can create something beautiful and quirky and not just be part of the homogeneous high street.
You will learn basic skills including how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin, feed fabric through, sew in a straight line and turn corners. You will also have time to explore the range of features and stitches on the machine and practice sewing different types of seams, developing the confidence to progress onto making all sorts of things.
You’ll be under the watchful eye of one of the fabrications team, who’ll guide you through the whole process.
Take a 'Learn to Sew' textile handout (T-Towel), other materials and refreshments away with you.
Spaces are limited as this class size is small, so book your place to avoid disappointment!
Teacher didn't stop class right at 5pm, she wanted us to finish the project we've started. Highly appreciated!

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
