6.5 hour class
This class has been developed for those who have little or no experience of using a sewing machine, and who want to learn not only basic skills but develop the confidence to progress onto making clothes, cushions and other exciting things for themselves using a sewing machine.
In this class
You will learn basic skills including how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin, feed fabric through, sew in a straight line and turn corners. You will also have time to explore the range of features and stitches on the machine and practice sewing different types of seams, developing the confidence to progress onto making all sorts of things. In the afternoon you will put your new skills into practice and create your own applique cushion cover or lined tote style bag.
You'll be under the watchful eye of Fabrications founder Barley Massey, who'll guide you through the whole process with care and creativity.
Now you can
- finally fulfill all your wildest fashion dreams (within reason)
- learn the lifelong skills of how to hem worn-out edges and apply a pocket or patches to some of those clothes in need of a helping hand
- enhance your skills with additional classes
Take a 'Learn to Sew' textile handout (T-Towel), other materials and refreshments away with you. Your own stylish applique cushion OR lined tote style bag

About your host, Fabrications
Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
All materials are provided (but you are welcome to bring your own for the cushion or tote bag afternoon project)
Suitable for ages 8+ (if accompanied by an adult attendee)
