Sewing class hosted by Fabrications
2.5 hour class
Time to transform your wardrobe! This class provides expert guidance from Fabrications expert sewer, Barley on how to revamp and embellish all those wardrobe items that previously seemed broken or in need or inspiration. This session offers an opportunity to go through your wardrobe and find items that you might not be wearing because they're broken or a hem needs lifting, perhaps your body shape has changed or you've bought a vintage item that needs to be modified or maybe something just needs to be revamped and embellished.
Basic sewing skills (hand and machine) are required to make the most of the session. If you are new to sewing and don't feel ready to embark on working on garments directly, we recommend booking in for the whole day and participating in the morning session, here, or just the morning session, here.
In this class
The types of tasks and projects that students will undertake during the class include: -Re-tailor items to get a better fit -Reduce or extend the length of a garment -Patch or darn holes in cloths and woollens -Replace a broken zip -Refashion a dated item -Embellish with applique, embroidery, lace, braiding etc -Give a garment a creative make over or upcycle into a whole new garment or accessory
Now you can
Students will be able to take home all that is made during the class. You should be able to complete 1 - 3 garments, but you are welcome to bring in additional garments to get advice on.
The official term 'upcycling' was coined by Reiner Pilz in an article by Thornton Kay of Salvo in 1994. When discussing the impending EU Demolition Waste Streams directive, Pilz declaired, 'I call it downcycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is upcycling, where old products are given more value, not less.'

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
