What you will do
6.5 hour class
This class helps people make more of a sewing machine, enhance previously acquired sewing machine skills and is a natural follow on class to any of our Beginners Sewing 1 - introduction to using a sewing machine class or for those who already have some basic sewing machine skills but would like to progress further.
In this class
In the morning you will be able to insert zips, make buttonholes and add bias binding (and also learn what that is) whilst creating your own stylish 'Utility Roll' (great keeping tidy your sewing notions, brushes, make up etc) designed by your teacher Barley Massey.
The afternoon will put everything that you've learnt in the morning into practice and you will leave with a unique made to measure skirt or pair of shorts.
Fabrications founder, Barley Massey will be guiding you through the process and has devised a few different designs to inspire your creative skirt making.
Now you can
- understand best way to use fabric or shirts economically and understand direction of the fabric grain
- assemble flat fabric panels on the sewing machine to create a 3d form
- get into free style cutting and/or the art of upcycling

About your host, Fabrications
Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
