FAQs
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes! I shall guide you through each step of the process so that you'll feel confident and learn the basic skills needed to make your sneakers.
I'm not very strong or able bodied, will I struggle?
Cutting leather, punching holes in leather and sewing leather can be hard work physically and requires some degree of strength and mobility in your hands. I can help with some of these aspects.
Is your workshop wheelchair accessible?
Yes, my studio is on the ground floor and there are no stairs. I have a normal height table for wheelchair users to work at. The toilet is on the same floor but hasn't been adapted for wheelchair users.
Do I get to choose the colour of my sneakers?
Yes! I have a wide range of coloured leather for you to choose from. You can add a back tab in a different colour and/or choose contrasting or matching thread to sew your leather uppers to your soles.
Is there parking?
There are only 4 parking spaces for the building which unfortunately cannot be booked. On street parking with parking tickets are available (max time is 3 hours but you can pop out and move your car to another bay!)
What do I do for lunch?
I'll provide teas/coffee and cake/biscuits and we'll take a short lunch break. There are plenty of independent cafe's nearby in Stokes Croft to grab lunch.

Your Teacher

Esther set up Leather Needle Thread in 2016 teaching handbag making workshops in Bristol, UK. Having guided over 300 people to make their own DIY leather bags (and the odd espadrille and leather sneaker!) from scratch she learnt what they found challenging, what they enjoyed and how they developed a sense of pride in their abilities.

Esther has been a leatherworker for over 10 years and studied bag design and construction at the London College of Fashion before going on to work in the industry as a leatherworker and sample maker. The bag making kits were dreamed up because she…
