What you will do
Two session course
The aim of this course is to expand your experience in making bases for mosaic but could also simply become an attractive sculpture for your garden or home. (This course doesn't include laying mosaics onto the sculpture. However you can do this in a follow up course 'Mosaic for Gardens and Scultural Form')
We will work with polystyrene to create 1 main piece (we expect this to be a bit smaller than those in the course images), so come with your designs and ideas in hand and we will make them into a reality.
You will learn and practice a variety of techniques to shape the polystyrene and create light but solid bases for mosaic that will be suitable for outside if you want them to be. We will investigate the tools and techniques and the materials used in this process and there will be the opportunity to feed back and discuss the complexities of this process and to learn from each student’s experience. We will also look at design considerations that make the base suitable for mosaic and consider materials, cuts, spacing and andamento that will work with the shapes created in the class. By the end of the weekend you will hopefully have the finished bases to work on but also the design ideas to progress the project.
Your tutor: Tamara Froud Tamara Froud has been teaching mosaics since 2001 and bringing schools and communities together to make site-specific mosaic art. She has worked extensively on public art and 3D installations. She is also Vice Chair of BAMM (The British Association for Modern Mosaic).
In the summer term (starting Monday 27th April) we will have a Mosaics for Gardens and Sculptural Form course, where you can learn to mosaic your sculpture. This will run on Mondays and is a 6 week course. Alternatively you can also join our Various Methods courses to mosaic the sculpture.

Please think about design ideas and email email@example.com so that we can make sure that we have a productive couple of days. This is about learning the method so that if you want, afterwards you can create anything you like of any size you like. I want to encourage you to choose something that is manageable – after all how many of us have unfinished pieces hanging around?
