Majolica, or the Azulejo tile, is a traditional way to decorate and glaze ceramic seen primarily in Mediterranean countries. This technique which originated from the Moors varies in colour pallet and pattern finish depending on the region. Cobalt and other oxides are painted onto an unfired tin glaze resulting in vibrant colours with remarkable definition.

On this course you will learn everything you need to know to complete your own set of hand painted, colourful, ceramic tin glazed tiles. You will learn everything from the mixing of the colours to the application of traditional repeat geometric patterns. If you’re…

There will be up to 8 students per session. We pride ourselves in our more relaxed intimate environment allowing more one on one time with the teacher.
What Should I Wear?
While the majority of clay can easily be washed out of your clothing, working with terracotta and deeper colours can leave stains. Please come dressed in clothing you do not mind getting dirty and can easily be put through the washing machine. We will provide each maker with an apron for their use during the session.
What Should I bring?
Each class will be fully stocked with all the materials and tools needed. All clay, glazes and firings are included within the cost of the course. Please bring your own sketchbook and drawing/writing materials for note taking and design sketching.
Will there be food provided?
We will provide a range of teas and coffees and some light biscuits. If you would like some a more substantial meal we are conveniently located near Mercato Metropolitano and Borough Market where you can find a range of local restaurants and delis.
What are the COVID precautions?
We will always be in keeping with the government guidelines for Schools and Education. Our teachers are tested regularly. If you are feeling unwell please do not come in to the session.

I really liked the teacher and the setting for the class, but there's room for improvement. We spent so much time glazing the tiles that we had very little time for applying the design and painting the tiles. I think it would have been better for the teacher to do the glazing before we arrived, and just demoed it during the class. There were only two attendees, and the teacher offered us both lots of help, but she said very few people get through all four tiles because of the time constraints. Also, only four designs were available, which I thought was very limited. It would have been really helpful if we'd been emailed before the class with information about the size of the tiles and the sort of designs that work, so we could have had time to think about designs and bring ideas. I didn't like what I made, and I don't think I will collect the tiles - which is very rare for me. It wouldn't put me off classes at Decima - I did a great one last year and have another booked - but I wouldn't recommend this particular class, unless they make some changes.

This was an absolutely fabulous course. The venue was easy to find and travel to. The teacher was fantastic and explained thoroughly what we would be doing step by step without overwhelming us with information and instruction. I went with my daughter and we were totally absorbed in the process from start to finish. I would say I’m not particularly artistic but it has really inspired me to book another course. Highly recommended for those looking to dip your toes into the ceramic waters. We will be collecting our tiles in a few days and are very excited to see the results.

Fantastic workshop decorating Portuguese tiles. Annette was a great tutor, creating a nice atmosphere and providing clear guidance for each stage of the process. She was generous sharing her expertise and as someone with little art experience, I appreciated her tips on decorating.

Loved it. Had a fantastic, passionate, lovely teacher in Annette (whose own work is absolutely BREATHTAKING btw so you know you're in good hands). Could easily spend a whole day doing this.

A fantastic workshop that I brought my partner to. We’re both in agreement that the teaching was excellent and so insightful and the class was paced beautifully. The time flew and I really feel as though I learned some new skills and my creativity was encouraged. A lovely studio too. Thank you for a memorable experience; I’ll be bringing my mother to a class too.

As someone who did some tiling training (fitting) at a builders/construction college and having been to the Alhambra in Spain I had been looking for and wanting to do a course like this for a long time. It was a very welcoming and friendly space. The teachers were very knowledgable and professional with a lot of ceramic experience All the tools and equipment was laid out and there was plenty of time for all the processes with full explanations of what to do, and to not do and some of the science behind the technique

Fun and therapeutic Azulejo painting workshop! Highly recommended. Both teachers are super friendly and amazing. Can’t wait to see the final product :)
