2.5 hour class
This hands-on class will refresh the basic sewing machine skills of participants, alongside a series of hands on exercises and demonstrations by Barley, giving you the basic practical understanding in how to tackle simple sewing alterations, repairs and 'upcycling'.
This session precedes an afternoon class 'Refresh your Wardrobe', in which you will learn how to work directly on your own clothing, which is available to book as a full day option.
In this class
There will also be a collection of transformed garments to show the innumerable possibilities of upcycling. Taught by Fabrications' own Barley Massey, who will share a variety of techniques, tips and tricks she picked up during her 15 years of working freelance in wardrobe for film and TV and through her own textile upcycling practise of over 20 years. This class will make you see old clothes in a whole new way!
Now you can
- Make alterations to your garments using the techniques learnt during the class
- Feel comfortable, and gain expert knowledge of, upcycling
- Pass on the skills and techniques learnt in the class to friends and family
Students will take away a series of samples to remind you of what you learnt during the class.

About your host, Fabrications
Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
