    What you'll learn

This three day intensive dressmaking course, just off Brick Lane, is perfect for any ability level. Fashion Antidote will show you all the essential skills you'll need to start making your own beautiful clothes.

    In this class

Over the three days, your expert guide will start by teaching you the basics, before showing you how to apply these skills in order to make your own simple skirt. Throughout the course they will be on hand to answer any questions you might have and to make sure you've got each skill nailed down before moving on.

To begin with, your instructor will show you how to use your sewing machine like a pro, including what all the different parts do and the best way to set up your machine. You will then learn the basic stitches, seams and how to finish off rough edges before moving on to some trickier techniques such as facings, darts and incorporating zips into your designs. Once you've mastered these, your instructor will show you some of the more advanced skills, which you will need in order to make clothes, such as gathers, frills, hems and machined buttonholes.

In order to make a skirt which fits, you need to know the measurements of the person who will wear it, but do not panic, your guide will show you the best ways to take body measurements, before you crack on with making your skirt using all your new skills!

    Now you can

    • use a number of advanced sewing techniques
    • choose and use a commercial pattern to make a skirt
    • be the coolest person in the room because you made your own skirt

For this class you will need to bring a medium weight non stretch fabric for the skirt. If fabric is 115cm or 150cm wide, buy 1m 10. You will also need a 20cm concealed zip, otherwise known as an invisible zip. We'll provide the skirt pattern and all the tools you'll need. We'll be in touch when you book with more details!

    Did you know?

The art of tailoring began as early as the 13th century, as people started to see clothing as a way to accentuate their figures, rather than concealing them. The word "tailor" first appeared in The Oxford English Dictionary in 1297.
