We were taught everything from the origins of marbling, how to prepare the water and paper, how to use the paints and to get special effects. I learnt a huge amount and now have a new love in my life! I’ve become inspired to try this at home, especially the Ebru and can’t wait! Lucy and Josh were very friendly and approachable and certainly know the subject inside and out. The venue was perfect, felt very creative and spacious. Parking was available, tea and coffee provided so all good. The email then giving me extra hints and tips, websites etc is also very helpful. I am so glad I chose this beginners workshop and would love an intermediate follow up course.

Your Teacher

Lucy McGrath started Marmor Paperie in 2015 with the aim of breathing a new life into the dying art of paper marbling. Having discovered marbling on a holiday to Istanbul, where it is still widely practised, Lucy caught the marbling bug and began ravenously learning all she could about this fascinating craft.

Having learnt bookbinding at university, Lucy quickly realised how well the two crafts complemented each other, so Marmor Paperie was built around hand-made notebooks and sketchbooks covered with her marbled papers.

Lucy was awarded the Cockpit Arts / Arts Society grant in 2016 which funded a studio at…

Venue - fantastic at Cockpit Arts in Deptford. Light and spacious with all the facilities we needed Lucy is knowledgeable, calm but able to demonstrate her passion for this unusual art We learnt a little of the history of marbling and then some basic skills including how to set up your materials, some basic and some more complex patterns. I was hooked!

we seemed to learn EVERYTHING....it was an incredible half day, packed with well presented information and a lot of fun. I created some beautiful patterns almost immediately. Lucy could not have been more friendly. Totally hands on. Want to go again! Best of all she was generous with all the information one needs to continue this at home. The setting was great.

We learnt the basics and more with Lucy and I feel really excited to try it at home. Lucy was welcoming and enthusiastic the room was spacious with tea and biscuits. I feel Lucy packed in a lot in a short time which was great and whet my appetite for more. Also appreciate the follow up email with video recommendations :) thanks very much x

I had a great time at my marbling session on 29th September. It was rewarding to immediately see the results of my work and to experiment different designs. Lucy was very lovely and made everyone feel at ease. It would be helpful if each person had their own marbling bath.

Lucy's class was brilliant. She was very thorough and patient, and we learnt a lot in the space of a couple of hours, with some gorgeous pieces to take home. I've left feeling confident and inspired. Thank you!

Lucy was a fantastic and engaging teacher, bursting with a knowledge and passion for marbling. My partner and I learnt some great marbling tips and skills and feel more confident trying them out at home. The venue was perfect too, well set up and really easy to find. Josh - Lucy's assistant was also very helpful. We would definitely recommend - thanks again for a really fun and insightful morning!

I absolutely loved it, it starts with a basic introduction of the whole process and goes from simple basic exercises to more complex styles, perfect for beginners and people that already have some knowledge and wants to step it up.

I'd been looking forward to this workshop for months and it absolutely delivered! The venue, Cockpit Arts, was a cool space with plenty of room for storing bags and to even make a bit of a mess while learning how to marble, with good natural light. The workshop size was just right, with about 10-12 of us, and Lucy is a friendly and helpful teacher. It's exciting to get stuck into a new art form and, as was explained in the historical opener, there are only about 6-7 professional traditional marblers in the UK, so Lucy's great instruction style and enthusiasm really encourages any students who might consider taking up the craft outside of the workshop. (I think most of us would!) I hope she can host a 'follow-up' workshop for anyone who wants to keep going on what we've already learned -- I'd sign up in a heartbeat!

I was made very welcome at the paper marbling workshop. Lucy is very creative, knowledgeable and skilled and is an excellent teacher. There was a good balance with an introduction to marbling and step by step demonstrations as well as lots of time to get on and try marbling for ourselves. Lucy was always on hand to give tips and advice. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and I learnt a lot more than I thought I would. Any papers that weren’t dry on the day were sent to me by post. The facilities were very good and the venue was spacious and ideal. Thank you Lucy!

The basic techniques of paper marbling. The teacher was clear, generous with knowledge and equipments and had done a large amount of prepartion to facilitate the speed of the workdhop. the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. The venue was clean and comfortable with plenty of refreshment . I would welcome the opportunity to repeat the course, perhaps starting where we left off.

I enjoyed this workshop. The tutor was informative and open to questions. She started with the basics and gradually introduced the class to various techniques and colours to produce a range of works. The atmosphere in the workshop was friendly and it was interesting to see the variety of pages produced by participants. The room was large enough to work comfortably and refreshments were available.

A fabulous few hours of marbling! What a fun way to start your Saturday (the early start is worth it)! Lucy was a great teacher, happy to answer my many questions, and clearly demonstrated each of the different techniques before we had the chance to give it a go ourselves. By the end of the workshop, we had all produced a great selection of beautifully patterned papers, all of which, once dry, are mailed free of charge to our addresses. A highly recommended workshop!

The teaching was excellent. Lucy explained the techniques really well. I and my sister and my granddaughter had a thoroughly good time. The venue was good and I could park!

Really great fun! I went to the class on my own and found a lovely bunch of people to hang out with and had a fab time learning about paper marbling. I've picked up enough skills in the day to feel relatively confident about trying it out on my own. Lucy was really welcoming to all learners and very open with sharing her skills and top tips of the trade. Kanli

A very enjoyable class with Lucy at her studio in Deptford. Marbling offers so many ways to produce beautiful, intricate designs without any artistic skill or experience. The technique really brought out the creativity in the group and everyone produced around 10 marbled designs and also a ceramic bauble.
Emma - 14 April 2018
Very enjoyable and very useful session. Lucy was very tolerant of me asking about techniques I'll need a few years practice before I try out; the handout/ follow up content has all the details I'd need to try the basics again at home. The venue was practical and as comfortable as you want when you are spattering paint around.

This was a really good introduction to paper marbling. All the tools and equipment needed were provided along with instructions for how to continue marbling at home. Lucy also gave an interesting history of paper marbling and showed some examples of how it was used in bookbinding. I had fun getting a messy with acrylic paints, trying out different colours and techniques. I made lots of sheets of paper, which Lucy posted to me a few days later once they dried. Now they can be used for cards, wrapping paper or bookbinding. It was also interesting getting to do a workshop in a working studio. Highly recommend it!

Very welcoming. Great bright studio space. All materials laid on. Clear instruction from a passionate teacher and came away with loads of tips tricks and techniques to continue this hobby if you wanted to.
Joshua - 5 March 2018
Really enjoyed this hands-on workshop, and amazed (as a newcomer to marbling) by the array of colourful designs produced in a well-paced, but relaxed, session. Lucy is an excellent tutor, clearly explaining and demonstrating the various stages in the marbling process, starting with the basics (no prior knowledge is assumed) and gradually building up to more complex techniques and paint effects. She is very friendly, encouraging and happy to share her vast knowledge and experience of this craft with us. All in all, great fun and highly recommended.
