6 hour workshop
All levels welcome
Reel + Fold, SE14
Marbling is addictive - fact! If you love colour, pattern and all things paper, then this is the experience for you!
What will I learn?
On this one day introductory course you will learn:
By the end of the day you will have the skills to produce your very own designs at home. You will also have created a stack of your own papers which can be sent or collected after they are dried and pressed at the studio.
Marbling can be a wonderfully messy business, so please wear old clothes/shoes/an apron that you don't mind getting a bit paint splattered! Materials will be provided for the workshop but there will be supplies and packs available to purchase on the day. Please do bring a packed lunch or snack as the nearest cafe does not open at weekends. Teas and coffees and biscuits will be near at hand all day! Please also be aware that we have a studio dog called Ludo, who is very docile, soppy, and addicted to Bonios.
The art of marbling is also known as ebru ('cloud art'), possibly after the way the paints billow like clouds once thrown into the marbling tray. The historic technique taught in this workshop was used in Turkey as far back as the 15th century. The art then spread across Europe, and ever since then has been a method of producing unique designs on paper. It has long been used in traditional bookbinding, although it is now widely used as a method of decoration in all sorts of arts and industry.

Paperwilds is run by bookbinder, paper artist and photographer Freya Scott. Freya has been a bookbinder for 8 years and has worked for various binderies and institutions across the south of England. She has been teaching for the last three years in various places in London and across the country. She is currently principle instructor at Bound by Veterans, a charity that uses bookbinding and related crafts as part of a rehabilitation therapy for sick and injured veterans.
In London she works in a joint studio called Reel + Fold, which is part-time bindery, part-time photography studio. She shares the space with a commerical photographer/DOP, and Ludo, who is her dog-shaped chief supervisor/cuddle supplier.
We currently only run classes for those aged 18 and over.
