What happens in this class?

Kurinuki is the traditional Japanese pottery art, which implies hand-building and carving from a single block of clay.

Kurinuki pottery art differs in instinctivety, so get ready to forget about the “right” clay forming and let yourself craft asymmetric and imprecise articles. Focus on the pleasure received from the fascinating process of making ceramics, and create vessels that will reflect your personality and creativity.

FAQs
How many people will there be in each class?
There will be up to 8 students per session. We pride ourselves in our relaxed intimate environment allowing more one on one time with the teacher.
What Should I Wear?
While the majority of clay can easily be washed out of your clothing, working with terracotta and deeper colours can leave stains. Please come dressed in clothing you do not mind getting dirty and can easily be put through the washing machine. We will provide each maker with an apron for their use during the session.
What Should I bring?
Each class will be fully stocked with all the materials and tools needed. All clay, glazes and firings are included within the cost of the course. Please bring your own sketchbook and drawing/writing materials for note taking and design sketching.
Will there be food provided?
We will provide a range of teas and coffees and some light biscuits. If you would like some a more substantial meal we are conveniently located near Mercato Metropolitano and Borough Market where you can find a range of local restaurants and delis.
Do you have disability access?
Our studio is fully wheelchair accessible. If you have any special needs or requirements please let us know in advance and we will try and accommodate you as best as possible.

The Kurinuki workshop is one of the many workshops/courses I have attended at Decima, and am never disappointed. I gained new skills and techniques, using tools I haven't worked with before, under the expert guidance of Netty Lindenberg. I am the proud owner of a delicately faceted tea cup! I highly recommend this course.

Great Kurinuki workshop and one of a kind! Annette was a great teacher and patiently showed us how to appreciate the art of imperfections. It was an honour to learn from a Kurinuki master.

Great workshop on KURINUKI Annette was really pedagogical and she meticulously checked that we were doing what we were supposed to at every steps. Interesting course that put you a bit out of the comfort zone by creating through imperfections

Thank you for the beautiful workshop. I’ve learned so much in a few hours. Kurinuki technique was a great experience and I feel in love with it. I am looking forward to come to other workshops with you.

The workshop was enjoyable and the artist who led it was very knowledgeable. I thought the session could have benefited from being maybe an hour longer to give participants a bit more time to relax and feel creative. At times it felt as though it was a bit of a rush to get us all done and out.

Really enjoyable experience. Annette was a nurturing and knowledgeable teacher and the process engaging, jut the right balance of mindfully haphazard and carefully focused. I'm looking forward to picking up my cup!

This was a wonderful class and so enjoyable. Our teacher not only explained the steps clearly and offered the right levels of encouragement and practical help throughout, she also imparted so much knowledge about the process and the history of the style of pottery. Very happy to recommend this class.
