What you will do

7 hour workshop

Daytime

Learn how to dye with indigo and natural plant dyes using Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing. You will learn the basic binding techniques and then dye a series of samples using natural dyes and indigo on cotton, silk and wool (cashmere!) fabrics. You will take home an A6 natural dyed hardback sample book for future reference.

Over the 6 hour workshop you’ll master a variety of binding skills and learn all about indigo and how to dye with natural dyes:

  • Use ne maki shibori (bound beads) to resist dye and create pattern including the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work.
  • Understand different natural mordanting and dyeing methods:
  • How to mordant your fabrics with Myrobalan, Aluminium acetate, Alum and iron
  • How to dye your fabrics with the following natural plant dyes and indigo to produce a wide range of colours; Tansy (Yellow), Madder (Red), Indigo (Blue)
  • You will also dye with a Mystery dye which is different each time the workshop is run!
  • How to overdye with indigo and modify colours with Iron
  • How to overdye with a different coloured dye
  • Unpick your finished work and reveal your designs.

Please note: The studio is up a flight of stairs and there is no lift and there are uneven floors in part of the building so not suitable for disabled access. This class is run at other locations with disabled access so please enquire direct if you would like to attend. Thank you.

All materials and tools are provided. Includes pre-mordanted cotton, silk and wool fabric for samples that you will be able to take away as a sample book. An A6 hardback natural dyed notebook is provided to stick your samples in.

Instructions on how to create and maintain your own indigo vat and how to dye with natural dye extracts and mordants will also be provided.

You will take home a set of samples for reference.

Silk scarves will be available to purchase on the day if you want to take other finished projects home with you.

Natural Dyeing Workshop by Romor Designs - crafts in London

About your host, Romor Designs

London-based Romor Designs was formed in the autumn of 2015 by Rob Jones, a shibori textiles designer and natural dyer.

Having discovered Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing, at West Dean college, Rob went on to study in Japan under indigo guru, Bryan Whitehead.

Rob’s passion is in finding the new in the old, building on the tradition and centuries of skill that shibori has behind it. He believes in taking work in new directions by combining techniques and inventing his own forms.

A core component of Rob’s work is his love of colour and pattern, which he brings to light in his colour saturated and complex fabrics. As lampshades, rich colours take on new life when lit, casting bright shadows; in home textiles, patterns are broken and reassembled to produce new and original forms.

To this end Rob’s work focusses on providing the structure to contain the organic nature of the dyes and processes he uses and carefully selecting those which will form the most compelling pieces.

Rob starts each day with a meditation to clear his mind and help him to focus on the tasks ahead. Every day is different and unique, much like the work he creates.

Rob teaches beginners classes in shibori with indigo dyeing as well as advanced classes for more experienced students.
