The Japanese craft of Katagami (stencil cutting) has been around for hundreds of years, with craftsmen making the most delicate and detailed patterns and representations of nature.

Katagami stencils are made from Japanese washi paper, soaked and bonded together by the juice of the Persimmon fruit and other secret ingredients and then dried and smoked to create an almost entirely waterproof paper, ideal for stencil work.

Things to remember

Fabrics are included to create your own samples. You are also welcome to bring your own pre washed natural fabrics and small textile items (such as napkins, t-towel, cushion cover etc) to experiment with.

Fabrications is doing a great job at offering quality, full-day workshops from Rob Jones. Stencils design requires attention to details, time, precision. It is my second workshop there with Rob, around Indigo dyeing - and it's always a blast. He's passionate about his art, the Japanese craftmanship & had wonderful stencils to showcase & share. We ended up creating our own, as well as experimenting and creating different designs on samples and tote bags.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London.
