MORNING CLASS: ZERO WASTE CANVAS BAG EMBROIDERY SAMPLER by MOODY BRIGHT DESIGNS - Part I
You will be guided through each stitch via a step by step approach that includes written and visual instructions. Artist Milou Stella has created the perfect beginner sampler, inspired by floral folk embroidery traditions which will help you familiarise yourself with a variety of easy motifs. There will be plenty of time to practice and play in between stitches, for the sampler comes with already printed designs that you can learn to recreate as you go along, but which you can also follow just by using the printed design guidelines. Enjoy your canvas bag afterwards!
AFTERNOON CLASS: UPCYCLE YOUR CLOTHING WITH EMBROIDERY by MOODY BRIGHT DESIGNS - Part 11
In this class we’ll look into different design ideas for clothes, from floral to abstract to an intro about embroidering text. We’ll tackle important trouble shooting issues that come with garments that are ‘already-made’ (think sleeves and/or lined garments for example). You’ll be able to use all of the stitches learnt in the morning based on your preference. Everyone is taught how to transfer designs onto fabric using the tissue paper transfer method, which is a versatile and inexpensive way to transfer any motif. You will also be provided with a zero waste folk inspired design kit, with traditional florals ready to use on your garment or to take home if you come up with a design of your own.
Each attendee will have 1:1 advice before starting your own project on their garment and you will have at least 2 hours of independent work. This is a creative workshop where both independent thinking and personal taste are encouraged and supported. However, you’ll be advised and guided through your project and you will receive advice both through written material and demonstration in class.
On completion of the class participants will confidently be able to:
Explore a range of hand embroidery stitches including: Running Stitch, Back Stitch, Split Stitch, Stem Stitch, French Knot and Lazy Daisy
Understand how to combine stitches to create a range of designs and stitched effects
Understand how to transfer a design onto clothing or cloth
Feel inspired to apply the same techniques to your own projects
Pick up some 'insider' tips, tricks and approaches from a practising artist.
LEVEL: All levels are welcome
Milou Stella set up Moody Bright Designs – a project that focuses on hand embroidered customisation of second-hand items. As a trained painter (Slade school of art), she plays with contrast, colour and texture. She began "Moody Bright Designs" as a response to concerns about fast fashion and the environment, with an urgent need to slow down and appreciate the process of making something unique and of quality, whilst avoiding waste as much as possible.

About your host, Fabrications
Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
We’ve improved the kit with the class by making it even more fun than before! Included in this easy-to-follow kit there is: - 4 embroidery flosses & additional threads for the afternoon session (but please also bring your own, if you have very specific colours in mind!) - one canvas bag with the printed sampler design - Embroidery needle - 6” hoop. - Zero Waste Handmade Moody Bright Design Kit - Tissue paper - Stabilisers You will also be able to download a free PDF with all the stitches and tips learnt during the workshop, so that you can keep developing and enjoying your newly found passion for embroidery any time you like. For the afternoon class bring your own garment to work with. It’s vital that this item is made from a stable fabric, such cotton and linen. Jersey can be brought in too, as we do talk about stabilisers during the afternoon. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact us. (Netting, organza, see-through fabrics, wool, lycra and nylon will be turned down. Sorry!)
