Embroidery is not the quickest way to create an image, but it shows dedication, perseverance, care, skill, patience and creativity. What better way to show our appreciation to the controversial trailblazers of feminism than to take the time to stitch a likeness of them?

With embroidery, you can use colour, texture, images or words. You can be quick and dirty or supremely skilled. There is no limit to what you can do with it, and in the hands of modern makers it's subversive, beautiful and infinitely varied.

The wonderful Eleanor Flynn will be leading this session - she's a stitch addict in the extreme. Choose from her images of Caitlan, Beyonce, Emmeline, Malala or belle to learn the skills and leave ready to stitch up a storm!

Did you know?

There's a reason embroidery, much like the trailblazers of feminism, has stood the test of time. Like knitting, it's hand enough that you can pop it in your bag and take it with you, or you can take on something on a heroic scale like the Bayeux Tapestry.

The workshop was brilliant. Teacher fabulous and I thought really nice to have someone from LCC there as well. I can't wait to try everything I learnt. Only downside was the venue - lots of flies and not great light, which for embroidery is tricky with my slightly aging eyes. But I would go again!

I had such a good time and learned so much! It was the perfect activity for a lazy rainy day. I woke up today (day after) so excited and I am sitting here trying to finish up what I started yesterday - I highly recommend it ;)

Really great introduction to embroidery. I had never done it before, and the tutor Eleanor was really encouraging. You also get to take away some threads to finish it off at home!

Feminist Embroidery Workshop by London Craft Club - crafts in London

About your host, London Craft Club

London is a hub of creativity, culture, and of course, craft, but it’s also a terrible time thief. London Craft Club founder, Sonia, used to be a member of an awesome little group called Crafty Mums. They were creative, crafty, motivated and united in their interests – but only once in all the years of meeting did they do any actual crafting together! Work, commuting, parenting and all the rest seemed to leave no time to do all the fabulous craft projects that were possible.

Sonia really believed that crafting can be so good for you. Good for socialising, good for sustainability, good for creativity, good for happiness. So she started London Craft Club. It’s a friendly, fun place for you to easily try new crafts or pick up an old one in lots of different London venues. No fuss, no bother, you can rock up with just your lovely self and leave with an amazing finished piece you’ve made in just a couple of hours. We’ve got all the right kit, equipment and templates you could possibly need, so you can focus on enjoying the crafting and making.

Sonia studied Glass and Sculpture at University, and sews, knits and even welds from time to time. She also spend many years working in education in all sorts of unusual and informal environments, so London Craft Club has grown out of her twin love of teaching and making. Along the way she's also met some great craft teachers , and shared her teaching skills with them too.

So welcome to the Club – come along to one of the crafty sessions soon and get in on the craft thing!
