    About this class

For those who want to get to grips with crochet basics, this technique is more freestyle than knitting, great for lacey designs, 3D shapes, or can even be used to embellish and join your knitting! So, whether you fancy learning an alternative to knitting, or just want to try something new, this introduction to crochet class offers a little bit of everything.

Beginners are welcome, and the teacher will tailor the class according to your ability and interests. If you would rather just attend the introductory morning session, click here, and if you're refreshed on crochet basics, feel free to just attend the afternoon class, here.

    Did you know?

The first published crochet pattern appeared in the early 1800’s. The pattern was released in a Dutch magazine, and featured delicate and detailed lacework for a bag. This early method of crochet was called tambour, and involved stretching the fabric over a sewing hoop.

    In this class

This full-day session will teach you about the fundamentals of crochet, as well as some more practical advice on yarns, hooks and pattern reading . It welcomes absolute beginners, as well as those with experience who might be looking to refresh or rediscover their joy of crochet

After this class you will be able to:

    • make a slip knot and get cracking.
    • masterfully hold the crochet hook and yarn with ease and comfort
    • readily complete an chain stitch, slip stitch and double stitch
    • do both rows (going back and forth!) and circles (going round and round!)
    • easily add a new ball of wool or new colour
    • finish up sewing those loose ends
    • complete a treble stitch
    • finally know how to combine the different stitches - single, double, treble and slip stitch to create texture and patterns

For those that are interested, expert teacher, Ayda Anlagan can combine getting started with creating some jewellery items. Stitches will include chain stitch, double stitch, working around an existing ring to build designs and add beads.

    Now you can

    • get to grips with the basics of crocheting and make progress with more complex methods
    • discuss ideas with our resident experienced crochet tutor
    • be a confident crochet - er!

    Take Home

You will be provided with a free starter pack that includes a hook, yarn and booklet, and refreshments. Also take home a fountain of crochet knowledge and your sample pieces.

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
