Daytime

For those who want to get to grips with crochet basics, this technique is more freestyle than knitting, great for lacey designs, 3D shapes, or can even be used to embellish and join your knitting! So, whether you fancy learning an alternative to knitting, or just want to try something new, this introduction to crochet class offers a little bit of everything.

Join Tone Ward who has a friendly and thorough teaching style who will guide you through step by step, offer feedback/observations and answer any questions as they arise.

In this class

This full-day session will teach you about the fundamentals of crochet, as well as some more practical advice on yarns, hooks and pattern reading . It welcomes absolute beginners, as well as those with experience who might be looking to refresh or rediscover their joy of crochet

After this class you will be able to:

  • make a slip knot and get cracking.
  • masterfully hold the crochet hook and yarn with ease and comfort
  • readily complete an chain stitch, slip stitch and double stitch
  • do both rows (going back and forth!) and circles (going round and round!)
  • easily add a new ball of wool or new colour
  • finish up sewing those loose ends
  • complete a treble stitch
  • finally know how to combine the different stitches - single, double, treble and slip stitch to create texture and patterns

Now you can

  • get to grips with the basics of crocheting and make progress with more complex methods
  • discuss ideas with our resident experienced crochet tutor
  • be a confident crochet - er!

Take Home

You will be provided with a free starter pack that includes a hook, yarn and booklet, and refreshments. Also take home a fountain of crochet knowledge and your sample pieces.

Did you know?

The first published crochet pattern appeared in the early 1800's. The pattern was released in a Dutch magazine, and featured delicate and detailed lacework for a bag. This early method of crochet was called tambour, and involved stretching the fabric over a sewing hoop.

This is an excellent beginners course, I really enjoyed it and was so surprised by how much I learned in a day! All supplies were provided, yarn, basic crochet stitches booklet and a great quality hook. Our teacher Tona has an amazing talent and passion for crochet and you can tell she really loves to teach others. She is very easy to learn from and has a great personality. Fabrications shop where the course is held is a fabulous little shop with a great ethos. Sustainability and supporting local and national suppliers being very important them. Loved this course and can't wait for the next class.

Really good class, especially as it was so small, we managed to get through a lot.

It was a great class, atmosphere and location! Ida made us all feel very welcome and relaxed and had a novel way of teaching how to crochet which helps you remember what you are doing. I will definitely be back for the advanced class!

I had such a good day. Really good fun. Remembered more than I thought and Ayda was able to move me on quickly. It was a nice number of people and the location was fantastic. I look forward to returning to Fabrications

Ayda is an excellent, patient teacher: I left feeling inspired and confident to continue this crap. Unfortunately we did not get on to adding a second ball of wool, but we did get through a lot! I left the class and immediately got a second hook and new ball of wool so I could get cracking with my first project ASAP.

It went as expected. Great experience. The teacher was spending time with each one of us to make sure we weren't block and learning correctly how to do the different stitches.

A great class! I was completely new to crochet and the teacher guided individually each one of us, teaching us at our own speed all the foundation of crochet. It was a wonderful experience to practice and learn in a very relax enviroment. I didn't even notice the time passing by as I was so concentrated in the art of crochet. Btw great food for lunch; just outside the shop you have the market with amazing vegan food! Couldn't give any better feedback. A recommended anyone that is a true beginner to take this class. A must!

Beginner Crochet Class with Tone Ward : Full Day by Fabrications - crafts in London

About your host, Fabrications

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
