What happens in this class?

Working with simple materials and your smartphone, Leo will guide you through the process of erasure animation in charcoal. Drawing, capturing, erasing and re-drawing, you will make a series of ephemeral frames to produce your own moving image.

The week will start with an introduction to inspiring charcoal animations, as well as process and technical set up. I attended the charcoal animation workshop with Leo and was very impressed with the course. In just one day Leo taught us a variety of techniques to use charcoal as well as how to execute a professional looking animation. He worked through a very well thought out structure for the day which facilitated us learning a strong methodology whilst also giving space for intuitive development. As someone who studied Fine Arts at a respected institution I can say with confidence that this workshop is of high quality and well executed. Highly recommended! Leo is also very friendly and interesting person who took the time to understand what every student was trying to get out of the course and catered his advice to the individual accordingly. The studio where Minerva Workshops is based is fantastic, its large and spacious and fit for purpose! Moreover, Lottie who runs the space and programming was extremely welcoming and accommodating, serving delicious food and refreshments. I felt well looked after and will be returning to attend more classes!

I took the Charcoal animation course with Leo on Sunday. He was fantastic at guiding us through and explaining how to create our animations. There were a wide range of experience and abilities between everyone on the class, Leo was great at navigating between all of us and taking us all along at the same pace. We all finished with a few short animations that we had created and an ability to continue creating them independently. I had a very fun Sunday afternoon with a really lovely group and came out having learnt a new skill.

I learnt so much in such little time- will definitely continue developing the skills I learnt in this class. Leo was an amazing teacher, he had a lot of patience and taught us some great techniques- and Lottie a wonderful host who provided a lovely lunch spread and endless cups of tea and coffee. I would recommend this class to anyone with an interest in drawing and who wants to see them come alive!

Yesterday at the Minerva Workshop was one of the best days I’ve had in a long while. I took a class in Charcoal drawing Animation taught be the very excellent Leo Crane. Leo is a remarkable teacher and a wonderful facilitator. In no time at all he expelled all my misgivings about my own ability and immediately he had us working in an atmosphere of real excitement and joy. He made the subject which I was honestly quite daunted by, feel so organic and natural to each one of us. It was amazing to experience. In the short space of one day, he had enabled each of us to produce at least five short animations. It was really exciting to see and I strongly recommend Leo’s classes to everyone. I will definitely be returning! Minerva Workshop is a great place. Light airy and with a wonderfully warm atmosphere thanks to Lottie who runs the place with gracious generosity of spirit. She even gave us all a super lunch. I would go back there anytime. I strongly recommend them to everyone!!

LeaI learnt so much about Animation both giving me the opportunity to learn how to use the app and technical skill to feto gain confidence in developing the medium. Le LLeLeo was a superb lecturer and communicator. The venue was very good . well equipped and location is convenient. A bit cold but it was one of the coldest days of the year so far! All in all it was an inspiring workshop and given me incentive to develop this medium in the future.
