About your host, Helen Rawlinson Design
Helen is a textile designer, based at the Chocolate Factory studios N16, London. She hand screen prints designs for a variety of interior accessories .
She has over 20 years experience in screen printing and with an MA in mixed media/embroidery at the RCA her work also has a stitched quality and is the signature to her original lampshade range. Helen's teaching experience is extensive having worked for several years at the Make Lounge in Islington - she enjoyed teaching screen printing, lampshade making and machine embroidery to a lively, sociable after work crowd. She runs occasional after school and holiday workshops at The Bath House Children's Centre in Hackney and has taken print workshops into local primary schools.
Helen is now pleased to be offering beginners screen printing classes from her fully equipped print studio for both adults and children.
Children and young people are incredibly curious and receptive to the hands on experience of screen printing and Helen is enjoying the opportunity to give back to the younger generation of creatives, eager to learn.
For adult workshops - this is a chance to try something new - have fun with friends and get creative without fear of messing up - screen printing is all about surprise and uncertainty with some amazing results, whether intentional or not and it's all good stuff.
There will be plenty of ideas to work from at the studio but if there is anything your child wants to bring along to the session, such as a book, toy or drawing that's fine too. They will create cut paper stencils using scissors - so in terms of a drawing, nothing too complicated - simple black and white images - no bigger than A4 with no thin lines. If you search silhouette images on the internet that will give you a good idea. It's a messy business, so please wear clothes that don't mind the odd splatter of ink, especially watch out for shoes! Aprons are provided but that pesky ink can strike at any time. All inks are water based and non-toxic. We only use scissors - no scalpels for cutting paper.
All students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
