Frank’s Wednesday’s virtual watercolour class on 3rd June, was again so helpful and to see him take us through his own thinking as an artist as he composed and painted his own interpretation in 2 different scenes. He demonstrated how with watercolour “less” can really be better than “more”; how to leave impressions rather than try to replicate a photograph- to create atmosphere. Seeing Frank working out all he teaches as he teaches, really works. Frank also gives time to show student homework to give positive, truthful yet encouraging feedback - so we can learn! No names are used when Frank takes us through the different pieces of watercolour he’s received.
Gillian - 4 June 2020
The sessions are always slow to get going waiting for latecomers, too much time spent by the tutor critiquing students' homework from previous weeks leaving not enough time for the tutor to complete his demo paintings in a timely manner so are rushed and the session overruns. The subjects are getting a bit repetitive.
Jean - 28 May 2020
Very good session as usual, not sure if it’s best to paint along or to concentrate on the demonstration, will try just taking notes next session. Either way very instructive.

Fabulous for me ... a keen beginner

I apologize for not having left a review before, even though I’ve attended so many of Frank’s sessions. Frank is an excellent teacher, he has imparted many useful and impactful watercolor techniques which I am learning to use and master. I also like his critiques of our paintings, I learnt a lot from them. I highly recommend his classes.
Melissa - 21 May 2020
As a newbie to watercolour (since the start of lockdown) I am not well-versed with the techniques, however I felt Frank took the time to tailor the session somewhat for my limited knowledge. It was insightful to watch him paint during the class and I learned plenty (from drawing a scene in pencil first, the importance of lining up things like windows at 90 degree angles, shadows, building colour). I've tried since to transition some of those learnings and can see a marked improvement so feel that this session with Frank was helpful for the progress of my venture into watercolour.
Tricia - 21 May 2020
Clear, informative fun presentation and info on artists.
Gillian - 20 May 2020
good session on expressive style painting with constructive feedback on efforts.
Laura - 18 May 2020
Frank is a expert artist and tutor. He has brought my painting on in leaps and bounds.
Jean - 18 May 2020
Very informative as usual. Demonstration is the best form of teaching. Look forward to the next session.

Today's class was a Master Class on trees; it was great. Frank showed various work of Edward Wessan to demonstrate amazing watercolour paintings as well of some of his own paintings inspired by Wessan. Frank painted 2 pictures himself during the class today, one based on Wessan and one on trees to illustrate using different tones well. By demonstrating techniques and talking students through his critique of his own painting, it is very, very helpful - and makes you want to have a go!

The focus of Frank's lesson today was on demonstrating painting the sky on a landscape to create atmosphere by leaving light, being aware of using different colour tones, some on "wet on wet" and some for creating sharper edges. Frank also demonstrated negative painting to create a bridge, foliage on a bank and some leaves. The context included an initial value study to decide areas of dark and light and how he interpreted the picture reference he worked off. It was an excellent demonstration showing the uncertain nature of outcomes of watercolour painting and therefore being flexible to adapt or even leave something. I look forward to completing and sending him a photograph of my painting homework in the next few days.

Relaxed and informative, perfect way to learn. Super to watch Frank's paintings immerge!
Graham - 12 May 2020
Great class , as always. It is really good to see Frank working in close up and to hear his thought process as he does so.
Ian - 9 May 2020
Really enjoyable and helpful session. Frank is a great teacher - he explains technique very well and talks through key elements to focus on for each picture. I particularly like the relaxed approach - so you can paint along if you wish or just watch & take notes for your own version later.

I'm really enjoying this class. I have attended drawing and painting classes before but I was looking for an online class to do during lockdown and Frank was recommended to me. He packs a lot in to the 1 1/2 hours so it is good value for money. He focuses on a different 'study' each week, talking you through how he builds-up his painting, with plenty of tips on the way. They you are challenged to have a go as homework and Frank sends course notes etc. to help. Some of the class are his regulars but are welcoming. We are a friendly bunch and it's easy to fit in and have fun while learning. I would say that you need some experience in watercolours for this class but, if you're a beginner, Frank also runs an introduction to watercolour painting which I'm sure would be excellent.
Gillian - 6 May 2020
Learnt a lot from very supportive tutor.
Jean - 5 May 2020
It was a really useful lesson taking us back to basics of colour strength, using it to create the important features of a picture. Also going through the principles of vanishing points was very clearly explained and demonstrated. I’ve just got to do it all myself now!
Marc - 1 May 2020
What a brilliant 'virtual' class. Frank is not only a masterful painter, he is also an exceptionally engaging, passionate and insightful teacher, and with good humour to boot. It was my first glimpse into the world of watercolours and I came away from the Zoom lesson feeling I'd truly inspired.
John - 1 May 2020
Frank's watercolour classes are very friendly and informal, but along with the bonhomie Frank provides lots of useful information and advice. They are a first class introduction to a fascinating subject.
Jean - 30 April 2020
It was good but the internet crashed half way through, not your fault.
Elizabeth - 30 April 2020
The themes of Frank’s teaching and demonstrations on Wednesday were understanding and practising value and vanishing points to create a value study ourselves of a pdf or jpeg picture of houses in a street in Kew. It was very good to see the process with techniques up close on camera. For example, as a technique he showed brush strokes with different strengths of water and pigment using indigo and raw sienna, which was so helpful. Excellent! I feel I learnt a lot to think about and apply as I move foreword and enjoy painting with watercolour. Frank also showed a photo gallery of students’ work they’d sent him and that was great to see the many varied interpretations of subjects. Thank you.
Angela - 29 April 2020
An enjoyable class. Frank took us through, step by step, firstly how to compose our paintings and then the importance of value studies to bring our work to life. He encourages us to have confidence, not to worry about small details and to be aware of leaving light in our painting. It is magic, to me, to see his paintings take shape on the screen. He has a deceptively relaxed style of tutoring but actually packs in a lot of useful technical information.
Teresa - 29 April 2020
I love the class. Frank is an expert, and as a teacher he is clear and encouraging and motivating. The classes are enjoyable and he makes everyone feel included.
Laura - 29 April 2020
Frank’s classes are always enjoyable as well as technically brilliant. His interpretation of colour, shape and form are inspiring. He is also a fabulous tutor and great communicator which helps hugely especially in virtual workshops.
mark - 29 April 2020
Very relaxed and easy going approach to watercolour painting. Frank manages to take all the tension out of painting by demonstrating with easy to follow steps. I’ve learned a huge amount in just a few weeks and gained more and more confidence to tackle subjects I would have previously avoided. M P London

I originally attended Frank's 6 week Introductory course (thoroughly recommended) at the boathouse whilst working in London for a spell. Since returning to my home in Somerset, Frank has been very helpful advising me "remotely" by email.....but this workshop is brilliant. Really easy to see everything Frank is doing and watching him work, whilst taking notes to refer to later, is a great learning experience. Session notes, advice, guidance and feedback are all excellent and lovely to share the experience with other artists, as well as sharing our work and ideas. I just really hope that Virtual Watercolours continues in some format after lock down has lifted...that's a big hint, Frank!
