What you will do

2.5 hour workshop

Daytime

Calling all novice watercolour painters! This intensive class is tailored to meet the needs of those who are looking to begin gaining experience with using watercolour. Each class is taught over 2.5 hours and is available across both afternoon and evening slots to ensure that you can take part whether you have some free time during the day or wish to relax after work. There is a maximum of up to six people per class in order that Elizabeth can spend enough time focusing on each individual.

The class will begin with a short introduction to colour theory and working with cool and warm colour palettes. We will then explore colour mixing and go through some exercises to become familiar with using simple techniques and to practice different brush strokes.

The rest of the class will be spent working on an individual final piece, painting from life. Elizabeth will continue to provide plenty of guidance and support, working with each student individually. By the end of the workshop, you should feel well acquainted with the fundamentals of watercolouring and feel confident to continue developing your own work and style at home.

The class is taught using only the highest quality of materials. Elizabeth can also provide guidance on recommended brands and equipment for future use.

You will each take away your own complete set of professional Windsor and Newton watercolours (RRP £18.99), some sheets of high quality 300gsm watercolour paper and a brush to continue practising with at home. And hopefully a new love of watercolour painting!

Renowned American artist Georgia O’Keeffe used watercolour as a means of exploring the intense colours and light she witnessed after moving to rural New Mexico. That's a real dosage of bright and bold colour!

I must say the watercolor painting class was one of the highlights of my trip. The studio was a little difficult to find as I couldn't find street signs. Muzzy had everything ready when I arrived. She taught us first then we practised brush strokes, then painted a still life. She encouraged and suggested as we painted. The time passed too quickly. Lizzy is an amazing artist. The studio is at Angel Station which has great architecture, a canal, interesting little shops, and the day I was there market stalls. As I said one of the best days of my holiday. Thank you Lizzy and the people at Obby.

I loved the introduction to watercolour class! I had booked it quite spontaneously, and ended up having a 1:1 session which was a fab bonus! We went through practicing different techniques and styles, before having a go at painting a still life, and just experimenting on the paper! The studio was fabulous, a quirky bunker type room which really set the scene for a new adventure! All completed with a take home folder and beautiful watercolours to keep for our own practice.Would highly recommend :)

This was a fun introduction to watercolours, we learnt basic watercolour techniques and ways to be creative with colours and different brush techniques. I've still got a lot of practising to do but Liz made it very accessible. Since the course, I've purchased a colour wheel which has proved very handy when it comes to choosing complementary colours. Thanks Liz!

This class was the perfect way to spend an afternoon in London with my mum to celebrate her birthday! We've both taken a couple of craft workshops before but never with paint so I thought this'd be another crafty avenue to try out! Lizzy started the class by talking about colour theory and basis brushstroke techniques, and the venue was decked out with Lizzy's sketchbook pages and plants, so you're surrounded by inspiration. She's also really friendly and the 2.5 hours flew by. My mum really enjoyed herself (as well as me) and she's done some more watercolour exercises since - I foresee a lot of hand painted birthday cards in the future!

A really nice evening with a small, friendly group. We learnt a variety of techniques then worked on a final piece, still life painting. I'm a complete beginner with watercolours and Lizzie put us at ease and made learning simple and fun, encouraging our creativity! Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to try out watercolour.

Introduction to Watercolour Painting by Indi Skoven - art in London

About your host, Indi Skoven

Elizabeth is a full time watercolour artist based in Angel, Central London and has been painting since before she can remember! She is the founder and designer behind the brand Indi Skoven ‘Into the Woods’ Prints, a collection of watercolour botanical and nature-inspired prints designed for use within the home. Elizabeth is known professionally for her prints but she also enjoys painting cityscapes and people for pleasure. Her desire to put paintbrush to paper is inspired by many things, from wandering past bloom-laden city flower stalls to driving down summery country lanes. She loves to bring the prettiness and wonder of nature indoors, whilst rendering it a little bit quirky along the way.

Elizabeth loves to teach and is keen to help others develop a nuanced understanding of how to get the most out of using watercolours as an artistic medium. She is motivated by seeing her students grow in confidence, enabling them to begin creating work around the themes which they find most inspiring.
