All skill level in painting are welcome to our workshop.  You don't need knowledge or experience in painting to attend.
 
You'll learn about primary colours, how to extract other colours from the primary colours to produce a colour palette of your own and use to create your masterpiece.  You'll produce your masterpiece on a 3D canvas using acrylic medium, and take it home with you.  

Your host Patricia, will provide advice, tips on composition and how to use the various tones of colours in creating your work.

A lot of artists create their own colour palette as a way of being cost-effective.  It is a fundamental skill to learn and use - rather than buying a particular colour which can be expensive.  Why not learn how to create your own !

Foundation Level in Fine Art Painting -1 Day session

Patricia is a qualified Fine Art Practitioner, a Visual Artist and a Private Art Tutor.  She studied contemporary fine art and passed with honours at Sussex University and subsequently went on to exhibit artworks in group exhibitions and sold 8 pieces of her own artworks online for the past 5 years.  

Patricia's successful journey has led her wanting to share her skills, techniques and experiences with others and this is where private art tutoring came into play.   She teaches basic to advance level in drawing and painting to GSCE and A-Level students.  Including fellow artists such as herself who wants to brush up on their skills or learn how to use a particular medium or subject such as portraiture.  She then went onto create a company called Foundation & Student Art Tutoring where she provides one to one private art tutoring to her clients, which also includes hosting fine art drawing and painting workshop.

Patricia enjoys teaching at all skill level.  She revels in seeing her students gain confidence and knowledge in finding solutions when they come unstuck when producing their artworks.   She is not afraid of challenges her students will face when learning at basic level and is determined her students succeed, to get the best out of them.  Patricia's philosophy is, art is for everyone and anyone can draw.  She has proven time and time again which is evidenced in her students’ artworks when they attend her lessons that her philosophy is correct.

Foundation & Student Art Tutoring started out as one to one Private Art Tutoring for over a year and has now branched out into hosting fine art drawing and painting workshop that covers two-day sessions.  Foundation & Student Art Tutoring's trademark is to 'Get the best out of you' - her students.  Offering seasonal tutoring lessons over a period of 3, 6, 12 and 24 months.  Patricia's clients vary from GCSE, A-Level students, artists, to individuals who has passion for art and want to learn how to draw and paint.

Pottery Workshop

On this throwing workshop, you will learn a little about the properties of clay and the importance of wedging. You will also learn how to centre, open and pull up the walls of your pot. There will be a maximum of seven people on this throwing workshop and each person will have their own dedicated wheel for the entire length of the session. There will also be two teachers with a teacher/student ratio of 1 teacher to 3.5 students. Please note, this is a group class. If you are looking for 1 to 1 teaching (one teacher to one participant) or 1 to 2 (one teacher to two participants) then you may find that a private session works best for you.

You can keep your best pot to take home, after it has been fired and glazed for you.  Please note that the last 10 minutes of the class is dedicated to studio practice, which involves cleaning of your wheel and tools.

What happens to your pots after they have been thrown?
At the end of the workshop you will choose your best piece or pot to keep. Two days after the workshop, your pot will be turned (trimmed) on the wheel for you.  Your pot will then be put on a shelf to dry for several days. Once dry, it will be ready for it’s first bisque firing in the kiln. After the bisque fire, your pot will be glazed and once again put through the kiln, but this time for the final glaze firing.

As you can see, your wheel throwing  experience is only a small part of a much, much longer and very labour intensive process. Turning (trimming and shaping your pot on the wheel) and glazing are all part of the making process and just as important as throwing on the wheel.

When your work is ready for collection, usually two or three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces! Collection is from Sak Beh Pottery and the collection dates are listed on the Sak Beh Website. So please check the Sak Beh Website for your collection date by clicking the tab, collection of pots. We don’t send out emails as they tend to go to spam folders or are not read.

Due to limited shelf and storage space, pots or work that remain uncollected one month after notification will (sadly) be disposed of.

(If you wish to keep a second pot, there will be an extra charge of £8.)

We offer a complimentary self serve tea bar with a selection of snacks.


Intensive Wheel Throwing Workshop

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

Neon Naked Life Drawing Class

You can make up to 3 pieces using these skills, which will then be bisque-fired, dipped in our beautiful stoneware glazes, and fired again. Most of our glaze choices are dinnerware safe. The results are stunning! You receive your posted creations within 4-6 weeks, imagine the magical moment when you open your box to reveal the results!

The vessels/pots can be for functional ware or try small sculptural work. You are welcome to come with your own ideas during the mindful 2.5 hours of making with the full support of an experienced ceramic tutor to help you realise your creative design ideas. No experience is necessary as the session is beginner-friendly as well for the more advanced participants.

The popular venue is our stunning Art4Space community arts centre, which is an inclusive, supportive, respectful, welcoming, safe space for everyone. Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue. Please note it is £54 per person for 2-2.5-hour workshop, plus travel expenses. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

Hand building pottery - Pinch, coil and slab building

This workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art, all of which enable you to make fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

For the workshop everyone will be provided with:
Set of 5x traditional Japanese hand tools
1x Shina ply woodblock - blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc.
Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes for taking prints away at the end of the session.

Introduction - Cups of tea, coffee and soft drinks followed by an intro from Alex on printmaking and his career.

Throughout the session,  Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone's prints will be individually wrapped in sheets of tissue paper and rolled up into tubes for safe passage home.

One of Alternative London's expert street artist guides will take you on a graffiti and street art walking tour (1.30 - 1.45hrs) of East London where you'll see some of the World's finest street art by Banksy, ROA, Shepard Fairey, Jimmy C, Invader, Stik and many many more. Then, after a refreshment break it's back to the Alternative London for a 2.15hrs workshop to try it for yourself!

All welcome regardless of artistic ability as the Alternative London team will teach you spray can techniques and all you need to know to draw, cut and create your own single or multi layered stencil and build your own unique piece of street art.

Graffiti Workshop with Street Art Tour: Full Session

This is a great introduction to pottery in a small class with lots of teacher support. There is a maximum of seven students to two teachers.  That’s 3.5 students to one teacher. If you are looking for one to one attention please consider a Private Class.

As an introduction to pottery, this class comprises of both throwing on the wheel and hand building. You will have your own dedicated wheel. We also offer beginner classes devoted solely to wheel throwing and beginner classes solely devoted to hand building. But if you just want to give everything a go in a relaxed and bright studio, then this is a perfect first step into pottery.

This is a fun class and you will be shown how to centre your clay on the wheel, open your pot and pull up the walls. You will also be shown how to make pots using hand building techniques involving the manipulation of clay, using the hand only. These techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building.

At the end of your class you can keep your best pot which will be fired twice and glazed for you in our lovely studio white glaze. Your pot will be ready for collection three weeks after the class and the collection dates will be listed on the Sak Beh Pottery website. We don’t send out emails as many end up in spam folders or are not seen. So please remember to check the website for your collection dates.

Introduction to wheel throwing

This two-hour session is perfect for beginners who want to try wheel throwing for the first time, or to work on mastering the fundamentals.

Get guidance on the basics of centering clay on the wheel, pulling up the walls, and shaping. As a beginner, you will start by learning the process to make a basic cylinder shape, before moving onto more complex shapes and techniques if you come to multiple classes.

At the end of the class, you will have the option to have your piece(s) fired and glazed using one of our studio glazes, if you have made anything which you wish to keep. One of our studio technicians will do this for you and we will contact you when your pots are ready for collection!

If you are comfortable throwing around 3lbs of clay, or if you have a specific project that you want to work on, please contact us before booking this class so that we can ensure it can be tailored to your needs.

The session is two hours and has a maximum of two students.

Pottery Wheel Throwing! Beginners Ceramics Session

Students get a unique opportunity to visit Colin McCallum's railway arch studio in the super creative neighbourhood of Hackney, located in a street with a long history of artists. Colin studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art and has remained in East London for many years as well as living in Barcelona for 14 years.

Colin is an award winning artist who has shown his art all over the world and has many international collectors.

In this fun and informative 2 hour class, students will be introduced to Colin's art and he will discuss his techniques in detail. You will get a real insight into the life of a professional artist too!

The class is suitable for beginners and those who have tried painting before and want more guidance from a professional. Colin will provide a large array of acrylic and spray paints and begin with showing some examples of his methods on paper. Each student gets the chance to work on paper and finally will be given their own canvas to create the final work which they can take home (if the canvas is not dry they can return to collect at a later date).

Guided by expert teachers, you'll be guided to create a fluffy and cosy artwork that you can add to your home as soon as you get in! This is a relaxing and creative class, giving you the chance to learn some tufting skills and make your own rug to keep.

In this introductory tufting workshop, you'll learn the basics needed to create your own rug! You will be shown how to operate a cut-pile electric tufting gun and start tufting to create a personalised mini rug up to 40x40 cm.

All materials for the workshop are included and you'll have your rug to take home! You can decide whatever you would like to make into a rug - go for a cute, quirky or fun design, it's up to you!
