Zines are small DIY books that employ the art of paper folding. Incorporating expressive text and visual art, zines are a powerful way of sharing your thoughts, memories and/or ideas. Imagine the anticipation of holding a handmade book in your hands; the feeling of delight and sense of discovery as you turn the pages. In this 1.5 hour workshop with artist Sarah B Davies, we will create our own handmade ‘well-zine’. Zines are a powerfully tactile artform that can support wellbeing – well-zines! We will consider specific memories of a time and place when we felt safe, at peace and/or strong and create a special well-zine dedicated to one of these memories. Participants can choose between filling their pages with expressive text or visual art, or both, through guided drawing and writing activities. 

This workshop takes place online to enable participants to relax and get comfortable - vital when exploring our own wellbeing. 

Once you have signed up for a workshop, you will receive a *Wellbeing Zine-making Kit* that contains gorgeous materials and treats, including a set of beautiful handmade papers, a folding tool, binding ring and other treats. Everything you need delivered straight to your door.

In this workshop you will learn the art of paper-folding to create a mini-zine in your choice of colourful handmade papers. You will be creatively guided through art and writing activities to fill the pages of your zine with flare. You will reflect on your achievements this past year,  create art motivated by your memories and set new goals for next year.

Family Art Zines: make your own books

Learn book-folding techniques to create your own 'zines' (DIY books) and use colour, drawing and writing to fill your pages

The Art Room is pleased to offer a brand new opportunity for one to one sessions delivered by artists Sarah B Davies, whose practice has focused on wellbeing and creativity for over 15 years. Utilising creative prompts and personal-led enquiry Sarah will open up new ideas for an artwork that responds to deep reflection of our own wellbeing.  

The Art Room's principles are that the joy of creating and exploring should not end once we finish childhood and move into adulthood. The freedom that your school's art room provided for expression, experimentation and creation can still be part of our grown up lives! 

The Art Room will travel to you, with all the kit and materials you need, at an agreed time and place that suits you (or online if outside of London - we can discuss the methods for delivering materials after booking). 

In a phone consultation beforehand you can choose sculpture, collage, drawing, painting or Zine-making and set your goals. From there we can arrange a time, place, theme and materials. Every booking comes with a limited-edition creative wellbeing art zine hand-made by Sarah.

Sarah will always create alongside you, inspired by collaborative discussions and co-discovering new results along the way.

If you want to be joined by a friend, partner or child, we can discuss a good rate for an additional person. Sarah is very skilled at running art sessions with children and families!

Sarah is the founder of The Art Room and has been a practicing artist for over 20 years, whose artworks are held in many private collections internationally. Her work was recently exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition.

Mindfulness and art - private 1 to 1 sessions, London or online

My art one to one involved paper folding using handmade papers to create my own 8-page book. I was then encouraged to recall a family event in my life and asked to explore why this memory remained significant - what senses were ignited during this memory: sounds, smells, textures etc. I filled the first pages with drawings inspired by this memory. I was then asked to detail the journey to that place in my memory, creating an adventurous map that filled more pages of my book. My book ended with a letter written to myself, promising to reconnect with family which was something niggling at me under the surface. There was no criticism of my style or ability, Sarah explores the personal story not the skill or method. She spent the whole time making something too so that the focus was never solely on me, but on what we could agree on together. What a wonderful experience and a truly unique piece of art as a result!
