16. Leather Workshop - Make an i-Pad Case or Folio
On this short leather course you will learn to make a beautiful, Italian leather folio. If you have already tried saddle stitch and fancy even more stitching to do, then this is the class for you! The folio is lined in 100% felted wool for added protection, is an envelope design with three hand stitched edges and has a small Sam Browne stud fastening in either brass or nickel. COURSE DESCRIPTION This fun, one-day course is taught by leather craftsman Frances Pinnock, formerly of Bill Amberg Studio and bag maker Simpsons. You will start with a set of tools, materials and the pre-cut leather pieces.(Please note that we pre-cut the leather using press knives to give crisp, sharp edges for a great-looking, finished product). Then through demonstration, trial and guidance you will learn: How to prepare and finish the leather edges How to mark and fix the felt in place and to attach the stud fastening How to cement the edges together How to punch the stitch holes and to set your work in a clam How to use an awl and stitching needles How to saddle stitch and to finish your work There’s no greater feeling than the satisfaction of making something yourself. A well-fitting pattern is an essential part of footwear design, helping to create well-fitting uppers and distinctive bespoke shoes. On this hands-on, practical course you will learn the aspects of footwear pattern cutting that make a shoe upper design unique and the various skills required to make paper patterns by hand. A well-fitting pattern is an essential part of footwear design and the skills and techniques that you learn will help you to design and create your own well-fitting shoe patterns in the future. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course runs on days by arrangement. Working on either your own or the school's lasts, over five days you will make a full set of patterns (including linings) for a simple loafer, a classic Oxford shoe and a Derby shoe. These footwear patterns and the comprehensive notes supplied in class will provide a strong foundation from which to create your own shoe designs and shoe patterns in the future.
