Working alongside BBC featured photographer Steve Franck, you will learn to develop your own street photography style and learn techniques which will enable you to capture images of people and places which say something to the viewer.

The philosophy behind the course is to progress from simply recording people and places, and make yourself slow down the process and consider the many alternatives to the immediately obvious. We want you to make pictures, not take pictures.

In a small group you'll learn and practice:

- How to analyse what goes into your shot to achieve photos with impact and interest
- How to build narrative and tell a story with your photos
- Guidance and practice on creating street portraits
- Effective composition and exposure techniques for street photography
- Practical considerations including what camera and lens equipment you should use, what you should wear, and how you should behave
- Shooting techniques so you are ready to capture fleeting moments
- Information on legalities surrounding the subject
- Discussion on what makes good street photography
- How to develop your personal style of street photography, advice on creating a series of images and working on a personal project

The workshop begins with a short talk and discussion on street photography, but the majority of the day is spent out with your camera, learning and creating images. You will be supervised, in a small group, by your tutor who will help you achieve your individual goals for the day, provide ideas, exercises, guidance and technical know how so that you will learn how to take more interesting, rewarding and street photos.

The workshop takes place around the Bankside area of London and will visit the Southbank and Borough Market.

Travel Photography Tour – South Bank

If you love taking photos, but want to understand how to take complete control of your camera to achieve the photos in your mind’s eye, then look no further. This  photography workshop - lead by professional travel and landscape photographer Matthew Williams-Ellis - will teach you all you need to know!

During the workshop you will learn the fundamentals of photography through ‘in the field’ tutorials, allowing you to practise and experiment with newly learned techniques while photographing some of London’s most iconic locations.

At the same time as learning the technical side of photography, we will talk a lot about the thought process of creating (not just taking) photos. Matthew will offer tips on composition, guide your photographic eye and help you develop a proactive photography mindset, ensuring you can apply your new found skills to any given situation when photographing in the future.

Itinerary

Session one: Head to The London Eye, Leake Street Graffiti Tunnels and South Bank area, where we will cover the basics of ISO, aperture, shutter speed, shooting modes and focusing. Once you are comfortable with this, we will start to experiment with slow shutter speeds while photographing interesting subjects such as the Thames, markets, buskers and South Bank’s iconic skate park.
Session two: After a break to refuel, we will discuss photographic story-telling and compositional ideas. The day unfortunately has to come to an end, with a sunset and blue hour/night shoot over-looking the Thames at somewhere such as Millennium Bridge, ensuring you return home with a variety of images to be proud of.
Please note: No two days are exactly the same, as photography is all about the light. Some subjects suit cloudy days and others suit sunny days. We will shoot wherever the conditions are best!

The workshop will take place at the iconic Old Spitalfields Market in Shoreditch, where, using the market as our learning arena, we will cover Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, Focus, Depth of Field, White Balance & Composition

Dan has shot hundreds of shows from some of the biggest Fashion Week runways around the world, both backstage & front of house, where the pressure is on to make the shot for the client & says "It's all about having control of your camera as the principles of image making are the same whether you are shooting Fendi ft Karl Lagerfeld at Milan Fashion Week or taking candid shots at Old Spitalfields Market... & the good news is; it's a lot easier than you think!"

How to Use Your DSLR Camera - 1 to 1 Beginners Photography

This class is aimed to give children from all backgrounds  a chance to experiment, have fun and get creative in abstract artist Georgie Mason's studio on Stepney City Farm.  The classes are grouped into different age-groups, please book relevant date:

[Georgie] (https://www.georgiemason.co.uk/childrens-workshops) believes learning to explore and follow one's intuition from a young age is crucial to a healthy and rich development into adulthood. This class provides a safe space for children to get messy, meet others, be in a rural environment and most importantly, be themselves :)

The class is 1.5 hours long and begins with a wander round the farm, sketching things we see including the animals. Then we will head into the studio and start with some warm up exercises - for example expressive mark making to various different styles of music, collaborative pieces aka 'Squiggle Drawings', and drawing each other without taking the pen off the page - all great ice-breakers :)

Then we will work on a larger collaborative piece inspired by the farm - either the animals or the plants/trees. Finally we will each work on our own piece inspired by what we've learnt.  Children will be able to take home a final piece that they have created.

Georgie has taught art to children for over 10 years in various locations across the UK. She loves working with kids and is hugely inspired by their energy and imagination.  She looks forward to welcoming your children to the studio.

When first learning how to use our cameras we often worry too much about the technicalities of the equipment itself and forget about the most important aspect of photography: the photographer!

In a relaxed setting you'll learn how to train your eyes to see the world as a photographer as well as learning some of the key compositional rules of photography, such as the rule of thirds and leading lines. You'll learn how to break them too!

You'll be able to go at your own pace and ask as many questions as you like.  Lou has experience of teaching both adults and kids (She is DBS approved although anyone under 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult).

How to Compose a Beautiful Photograph - 1 to 1 Beginners Photography

For all budding street photographers this class will give you some practical tips in how to get started in street photography.

In this beginners class you are invited to bring just one lens, a prime lens. A 50mm, known as the nifty fifty, would be ideal, or else whatever alternative you have. Prime lenses are ideal for street photography as they're lightweight and more discrete. If you only have a zoom lens then you'll need to be strict with yourself and use it on just one focal length!

As the quality of zoom lenses improves, we are often over-reliant on them and on zooming in and out to compose a shot. This can make us a bit lazy and we can also end up with way too many shots that we haven't put much thought into. Today we're going to move ourselves rather than the lens to get the best composition and pay attention to the smaller details of everyday life, as we take to the streets of Camden Town (or alternative suitable location), learning how to take those candid street photography shots.

I will talk you through the basics to start a solid, affordable and reliable system to take, edit and optimize your pictures to promote your online business, whether you're selling services or actual physical objects.  We will analyse the different kind of market and different kind of platform and assess together what is the best way to shoot, edit and upload your products. We will talk about different platforms and and how to approach taking your picture having different and flexible outputs in mind.

Introduction to product photography for social media

On this workshop, you'll learn how to shoot posed portraits.

I'll show you how to interact with your subject to get them comfortable to give you the 'look' you're after or get them to work with you so you can figure out what that 'look' is as you shoot.

You'll learn how to use natural light & artificial light to light your portraits & I'll show you how light placement can have a dramatically different effect on the mood of your portrait depending how you use it & where you place it

We'll be using a couple of LED lights & reflectors to demonstrate different 'looks' & I'll also show you a few of my favourite setups using combinations of natural & artificial light sources.

You will be taking lots of photographs during this workshop & will have lots of examples in your camera to use as reference points for your own future portrait shoots including photographs of each lighting setup so you can easily re-create specific 'looks' that you liked.
