4 hour workshop
Ever since we walked through the Anni Albers retrospective at Tate Modern we knew that The London Loom had to do a backstrap weaving workshop. The image of Anni and her students strapped to their looms in summer bikinis and shorts has been firm in The London Loom brain ever since and now it is so exciting to finally announce our first ever backstrap weaving workshop.
In this beginners workshop you will learn to make and measure your warp, thread the loom and strap it to you! Then we'll weave away for the rest of the workshop. By the end of the workshop you will have finished your handwoven strap to take home. You will be in awe of how hardy the straps we make on our backstrap looms are - hardy and gorgeous.
Choose from plenty of wool, acrylic and cotton yarns in the studio to make your strap uniquely yours.
The workshop will last roughly four hours and includes a 15 minute break - if you can bear to part with the loom.

About your host, The London Loom
The London Loom is a weaving studio in Hackney in East London, created by Francesca Kletz in 2016. The London Loom was founded to build a community of people who love making things with their hands and appreciate how good it is for you.
At The London Loom we want to encourage people to indulge in creating for pure satisfaction and fun. We hold community workshops and smaller classes in our studio where we welcome adults and children to work alongside each other; we believe that creativity and inspiration can come from anywhere, it’s not limited to age or background.
Francesca has been teaching weaving and other textile crafts since 2015 and has taught weaving workshops for Tate Modern, Southbank Centre, Scouts, Hackney Arc and the Royal Society of Sculptors and has appeared in (amongst others) Mollie Makes, Stylist, PomPom Quarterly, Time Out (on the front cover!) The Telegraph and is the author of Weave This (Hardie Grant 2018). The London Loom was also named Mollie Makes Best Craft Workshops of 2019.
Ultimately we want to share the good that we feel from learning new skills and making beautiful, tactile things. We teach and host a range of ‘alternative craft’ classes as well as our beginners weaving workshops, as long as there’s something to make, new people to meet and obnoxiously loud laughter to be had, we’re happy.
