2.5 hour workshop

Evening

We've paired up (get it?) with our favourite sustainable sock company Socko to teach you everything you need to know about darning.

During this 2 1/2 hour workshop, Socko's founder Emma will start off with a brief history of techniques from different cultures and look at examples and tools for mending woollens. You'll then have plenty of opportunity to play around with practical techniques and samples brought in for you to work on. You're welcome to bring items of your own that need mending so that Emma can best advise what works, but there will be plenty of fabric available if the moths haven't arrived at yours yet (they're coming).

The whole session will be fuelled by bottomless tea and biscuits and Emma, who's just great.

Did you know?

If you have a really well made pair of woollen socks or a beloved cashmere jumper with elbow holes you can give it a new burst of life by learning how to darn and mend your clothes. This is also a wonderful technique to learn if you love buying vintage and secondhand and really breathe new life into old and beautiful garments.

About your host, The London Loom

The London Loom is a weaving studio in Hackney in East London, created by Francesca Kletz in 2016. The London Loom was founded to build a community of people who love making things with their hands and appreciate how good it is for you.

At The London Loom we want to encourage people to indulge in creating for pure satisfaction and fun. We hold community workshops and smaller classes in our studio where we welcome adults and children to work alongside each other; we believe that creativity and inspiration can come from anywhere, it’s not limited to age or background.

Francesca has been teaching weaving and other textile crafts since 2015 and has taught weaving workshops for Tate Modern, Southbank Centre, Scouts, Hackney Arc and the Royal Society of Sculptors and has appeared in (amongst others) Mollie Makes, Stylist, PomPom Quarterly, Time Out (on the front cover!) The Telegraph and is the author of Weave This (Hardie Grant 2018). The London Loom was also named Mollie Makes Best Craft Workshops of 2019.

Ultimately we want to share the good that we feel from learning new skills and making beautiful, tactile things. We teach and host a range of ‘alternative craft’ classes as well as our beginners weaving workshops, as long as there’s something to make, new people to meet and obnoxiously loud laughter to be had, we’re happy.
