What you will do
3 hour workshop
Unless you grew up in the 1970s, you may have difficulty figuring out what string art could possibly be! And even if you do, what will come to mind are pieces of art created using wood and string. Only a handful of people in the UK are engaged in string art, but that’s about to change!
Popular five decades ago, string art is the little-known craft of creating beautiful artwork with colourful thread and card. In this 3-hour workshop, you will be introduced to string art and shown examples of a variety of exquisite designs and then let loose to create up to five greetings cards that family and friends will love – if you can bear to give them away!
Attendees at a string art class cannot help but feel relaxed as they get into their pieces. The process of making a card has been described as ‘therapeutic’ and ‘meditative’, and leave the classes feeling ‘de-stressed’. As you get into it, the need to concentrate on placing the needle in the correct hole will leave you unable to think about anything else. For three hours, you will be able to leave your worries at the door.
Your teacher, Laurie, is a teacher by profession, and over the last twenty-five years has worked as a tutor and workshop facilitator with children as young as four years old to adults. Since rediscovering string art in 2014, she has sold her cards in small art outlets and craft markets, and taught string art classes to all ages in the West London area. Her work has been shown at art exhibitions curated by UThinkPDP and Open Ealing.
High quality card (300gsm) will be used and you will be spoiled for choice when you see the variety of vibrant coloured threads at your disposal, allowing you to choose those colours that speak to you.
Classes take place at the Côte Brasserie café away from the main area. There will be complimentary pastries and a beverage available.
In the workshop you will: • Be introduced to string art • Be shown the process of creating a string art piece • Receive instructions on how to create your cards • Be able to choose from a selection of blank cards • Create make up to five string art cards
