What you will do
6 hour workshop
Deborah Barker is a natural dyer, plant alchemist and textile historian. She has pioneered the Fibreshed movement in the South East of England and is passionate about natural dyeing, the provenance of fibre and working with what the land around us has to offer. She has been teaching since 2013 and has been mentored by world renowned natural dyer Jenny Dean, collaborating and helping her in workshops and co-curating exhibitions. In this workshop you will learn about British Spring flowers, namely Tansy, Coreopsis and Weld - how to grow, gather and to prepare the dye bath. The colours they yield are from pale yellows to vibrant oranges. The day is a wonderful hands-on workshop, playing with colour and using vintage cottons and linens to dye. You will come away with samples of different coloured cloth that will inspire you, the knowledge to continue on your natural dye journey and you can come back and use the dyed cloth to make something in one of our sewing workshops. You are welcome to bring a piece of cloth, tea towel size, if you want to put in the dye bath at the end. In the autumn we will be running a woad workshop so you could also come back with your yellow pieces of linen to explore over-dyeing to create different greens.
