Two session workshop
Day One: Course tutor Joanne Edwards, will show you how to stiffen your felt then block the shape with pins and steam - (stretching your millinery material correctly over a wooden shape to create it's base). You’ll also learn how to wire your hat, curve a petersham head fitting and attach an elastic and comb so your hat stays perfectly in place..
Day Two: On Day Two you will move onto learning trimming techniques as you begin decorating your hat. You will be introduced to various processes including shaping and curling feathers and quills, creating flowers, twists and leaves and adding veiling sprays. You will then be ready to wear your new felt cocktail hat – bespoke and hand-made by you!

About your host, Joanne Edwards Millinery
Professional milliner Joanne Edwards worked within the fashion industry for ten years, designing womenswear and bridal dresses before starting up her own range of headwear and accessories in
- She studied under innovative milliner Noel Stewart, before working for couture milliner Edwina Ibbotson and fashion milliner to many celebrities Piers Atkinson.
Joanne creates hand crafted bespoke hats and accessories for private clients and special events, such as Royal Ascot. She collaborates on fashion and headwear projects, for brands including Vidal Sassoon.
Joanne has been teaching Millinery since 2016 as a short course tutor at Central Saint Martins and privately through 1-2-1 tuition. She loves to share her knowledge and passion for the subject and regularly hosts a variety of workshops and events catering for every interest in Millinery.
All materials are provided, please bring a notebook/pen if you wish to take notes and a small box to take away your work. We will break for a 30 minute lunch at 1pm. A local shop and cafe/restaurant are just a few minutes walk away, however please feel free to bring your own lunch. Tea, coffee & biscuits will be provided.
18+ A good basic knowledge of hand sewing and some patience are required for this course, as there's is LOTS of handsewing involved! (Please get in touch if this is an issue for you so we can discuss alternative options).
