Two session course
Bookbinding is a centuries old craft and thoroughly addictive. This class teaches the traditional methods used to make multi-section hardback books.
During this workshop you will make a book fully from scratch. You will learn to:
- Choose the right paper for your binding
- Start with big sheets of paper and fold sections
- Measure and pierce holes for sewing
- Sew onto bookbinding tapes
- Trim the book and line the spine
- Make a hardback, flat back case (the cover boards)
- Attach the book to the case using hints and tips to get that professional finish!
We will use bookcloth to make a super soft spine and you can choose from a range of beautiful decorated papers for the sides. Freya will take you through all the tips and tricks to make your book look and feel professional. Not only will you take home your own beautiful book, but you will also take home the skills to make many more at home!
This workshop is perfect for those with a little bookbinding experience, but it is possible to take this class as a complete beginner too.

About your host, Paperwilds
Paperwilds is run by bookbinder, paper artist and photographer Freya Scott. Freya has been a bookbinder for 8 years and has worked for various binderies and institutions across the south of England. She has been teaching for the last four years in various places in London and across the country. Her longest role was as principle instructor at Bound by Veterans, a charity that uses bookbinding and related crafts as part of a rehabilitation therapy for sick and injured veterans.
In London she works in a joint studio called Reel + Fold, which is part-time bindery, part-time photography studio. She shares the space with a commerical photographer/DOP, and Ludo, who is her dog-shaped chief supervisor/cuddle supplier.
All materials are provided and there will be extra materials available for purchase at the end of the day for making more books easily at home. Snacks and drinks and biscuits will be near at hand! Please be aware that our studio is also home to Ludo the bindery dog, who is super friendly and partial to tennis balls and peanut butter.
