    What you'll learn

The words 'beating' and 'brazing' might sound a bit violent, but they'll take on a softer meaning when you learn to sculpt with sheet copper. This four-day course at London Sculpture Workshop is the perfect beginners' introduction to working with this splendidly shiny and marvelously malleable material.

    In this course

This course takes place in the fantastic metal working workshop at LSW. On day one, you'll start by creating designs using paper templates and carving wooden moulds and formers. On day two, you'll learn how to cut, shape and fold copper by heating and beating (hey, that rhymes!). Day three will see you join copper by brazing using brass filler rods or rivets. And you'll wrap it up on day four with surface finishes, patinas and effects for sheet copper sculptures. We think you'll deserve a fresh copper ale by the end of all that!

    Now you can

    • master the basics for making copper sculptures, water features, hanging mobiles and more
    • navigate your way around a metal workshop and the tools involved
    • start calling yourself a 'coppersmith', which sounds super impressive and intriguingly old-school

    Notes

Participants are encouraged to bring along sketch books, ideas, small models or any reference material that might aid their work. Old clothes and strong footwear are essential in the workshop environment.

    Did you know?

Aside from gold, copper is the only metal on the periodic table whose colouring isn't naturally silver or grey. We think we get enough grey in rainy old London, so a brilliant shine of colour is always welcome! Learning to work with copper in this welcoming workshop will unlock a gleaming world of sculpting possibilities.
