    What you'll learn

    Whether you're already a dab hand, or just a beginner, this comprehensive 8 week course in creating children's books will school any aspiring author or illustrator in the art of spinning a yarn, telling a tall tale, or finding the perfect fairytale ending. As well as honing your storytelling skills, you'll also build your confidence in your own creativity. This course runs on both Mondays and Fridays - just select the one that works best for you from the dropdown.

    In this class

    Throughout this eight-week course, aimed at writers and illustrators, you'll explore every stage of creating a children's book - from initial concept to presentation ready to show a publisher.

    First you'll discover the modern children's book market and delve into its history, before honing your writing talents and illustration skills. Finally, you'll gain an understanding of the practical aspects of production and publishing.

    Open to both beginners and the more advanced, there'll be help on hand for first-timers - and ample opportunities to share and learn as a group. Although this is not specifically an illustration course, we aim to help illustrators focus their talents into the goals of character development and book layout.

    Now you can

    • See your imagined ideas set down onto the page;
    • Craft compelling stories with confidence, and illustrate them in engaging and original ways;
    • Use your newly-learned practical skills to make your creative ambitions a reality.

    If you do not have time to come to the full 8 week course Christyan also runs one to one workshop sessions from his home studio in Thames Ditton. Manuscript reading, portfolio evaluation services and Photoshop sessions are also available.

    Please bring just the usual notebooks and pens.

    Any additional materials for later activities will be discussed in the class to suit the individual.

    Did you know?

    Roald Dahl was devoted to the books of Beatrix Potter, and at the age of six he begged his mother to take him to the Lake District to meet her in person. The reception he received was less than welcoming, and he was told by the author to "buzz off!" Whether you're fond of children or have more in common with Beatrix Potter, this course is for everyone from beginners to intermediates.
