What happens in this class?

In this two day workshop Inksmith and Map Maker Chrissie Nicholls will take you through the journey of making your own unique map.

This workshop is about the art of telling a story in a map; recording an area, a memory, or a dream location. Using traditional and new mapping techniques and elements you will bring together your thoughts to create a very personal piece of work.

The workshop begins with a discussion about maps and their history with examples of maps from around the world and history. You will then move on to designing your map working towards a…

FAQs
Do I need to be able to draw?
No, you just need to be curious. I teach drawing and lettering but I can guide you and build up your confidence through the workshop so you can find your own alphabet of symbols and shapes if you really don't want to draw!
What do I need to bring with me?
Nothing other than your reference material. You'll be sent an email a couple of weeks beforehand with an outline on the kind of reference material to bring. We will have basic materials available but I recommend that you bring your own colouring pencils or watercolours and brush if you have good quality ones. A bone folder is useful too but if you don't have one or don't know what they are... yet, rest assured you will by the end of the class and I have some you can borrow.
How accessible is the studio
There's a staircase as we're on the 1st floor.
How do I get to the venue
As we'll be on the west coast of the island it's a little more involved if you don't have a car as the bus service doesn't cover the area we'll be located. We can arrange for lifts from Rothesay, near the ferry terminal, for those that don't have access to a car.

This was a wonderful workshop and I had travelled to Scotland from Essex specifically to attend. I could have waited for Chrissie to run this 2 day event nearer home, but the idea of spending time on Bute made it extra special. Chrissie is an excellent teacher and I had done her map making workshops before, so I knew this would be worthwhile and that I would learn even more. Chrissie always offers a warm welcome, friendly approach, and calm, patient approach. She is both encouraging and supportive, and always gets the best from people. Everyone's map was personal and very different, and that's because Chrissie is experienced, intuitive and flexible, and offers just the right level of help. I thoroughly recommend this workshop. My map is not quite finished as it continued to evolve over the weekend, but I love what I have done and will go on to make more as I came away with so many other ideas.

Chrissie ran an amazing workshop! I learnt so much in a warm and friendly setting and went away with loads of ideas to develop my own work around the theme of maps. The workshop was well prepared and organised. We were given very clear instructions and could ask for advice or help at any stage. The encouragement and inspiring environment was fantastic and I would take another workshop run by Ink Pot and Pen in a heartbeat!

A truly wonderful workshop with Chrissie who was so encouraging and organised. Many references and resources were made available, including her own inspirational work. While I was enthusiastic, but feeling unskilled, she cleary instructed and gently challanged my hesitations resulting in a map much better than I'd hoped for. I highly recommend this workshop and look forward to another with Chrissie.

Absolutely fantastic weekend losing myself in the fantastic world of maps. Chrissy gently guided, encouraged and inspired us throughout the weekend which resulted in some fantastic creations from all involved. Thank you Chrissy and please come back!
Janet Bentley - 3 October 2022
I really enjoyed the map making course. I learnt new skills and felt very supported throughout. I am an ‘arty’ beginner but was encouraged to find that I could produce something worthwhile.
Barbara Rimmington - 2 October 2022
Excellent mapping workshop, learned lots of new techniques (Turkish fold) and sparked ideas for future projects
Joyce Logan - 2 October 2022
What a lovely couple of days. Our tutor Christine was knowledgeable, skillful and infinitely patient. She had a wide range of source material available to provide techniques and inspiration. I would recommend this course and tutor to artists who wish to apply their existing skills in a new direction and master new ones.

I found this a very thought provoking course that enriched my experience of a place I have been walking most days over 15 years. Thank you Chrissie for giving me this experience and for teaching it so well - I look forward to attending future courses of yours.

Chrissie is a wonderfully informative and friendly teacher who guided us through a stunning map-making workshop that I found surprisingly emotional and very fulfilling. I really loved it and hope to take more workshops with her in the future!
Vick Fullick - 14 January 2020
I learnt how to plan and organise the project by talking through ideas before starting on the finished work. We were given a notebook specially for ideas which was great. We then learnt the specialised map-fold and how to bind and finish. We came away from the workshop with an almost completed piece of work which we could then finish at home. I was very pleased with the results and had a lovely personalised map to keep. Chrissie was extremely friendly, encouraging and patient and the day was a great success.
Nancy Angus - 14 January 2020
I really enjoyed the mapmaking workshop at Ditchling Museum – It was such a relaxing and fulfilling way to spend the day. Chrissie is a fantastically impressive workshop leader - she explains things clearly and gives you the space to develop your own ideas. She is also very well informed about the fascinating subject of maps and map making and provided lots of interesting background information. I was delighted with the map that I produced – it was lovely to have something unique and personal to take home at the end of the day.
Christine Langley - 13 January 2020
We spent the day designing and creating a folded map of Ditchling in an amazing venue, with a great teacher! I really loved the workshop and have used the map folding technique for creating inserts into cards for invitations! An inspiring and creative day!
Claire - 13 January 2020
Loved the class, the walk was fantastic and really opened up the area for me, despite me thinking I knew it well! Chrissie was very knowledgable good humoured and patient - also very encouraging for a non-drawing person! Loved the session and would highly recommend 🥳
